My computer is only running minecraft at a max of 40 FPS.
My soecs-
Intel i7 4790k
Gigabyte GTX 970
8 GB ram
My old pc could get 120 no problem and it was significantly worse.
I have 64 bit java, what could be the problem?

I've heard playing Minecraft 1.8.1 is betting than playing on 1.7 because they improved the performance of the game. Also, try installing "Optifine Ultra", then goto "Chunk Loading" and change it to "Multi-Core", this will boost your game significantly. Let me know if this doesn't work.

Hmm, that's interesting, but insanely annoying. I have the same card and I load up the game and bam, my FPS is up and down between 40 frames and 60 frames. That is *without* VSync or a framerate limit in options. I used to get absurdly high framerates with this game - I put it down for a while and when I came back (I suppose this was once 1.8 was live), the performance feels like I'm trying to run Metro LL and Crysis 3 at the same time.
I've made sure there are no background applications hogging the CPU and everything that that.
Is there REALLY no way to address this, other than running the game in 1.7? I've been checking forums and it's quite clear that I'm not the only one with this problem - 1.8 is by no means "new" and it seems as if they would have to TRY to make a mistake like this.
I'll keep looking, but I would love to hear from you guys.
Are there any video settings that can cause problems or are... taxing on high end PC's? (Sounds like a joke - this is a freakin JAVA game...)
