My first build pc wont post. I don't know what's the problem.

I need help. I'm building my first pc and it won't post. I did a external build to test it before putting it in the case. I have everything plugged in but it won't turn on. I'm not sure how to tell if one of them is doa. Please help.

Intel i7 4790k-CPU
Msi gtx 970 4gd5t-gpu
Xfx xtr 650w gold -psu
G.skill sniper 2x8gb -ram
Cooler master hyper 212 evo- heatsink

Try to boot with all plugged out off the motherboard except cpu, 1 ram and videocard. try to boot with the integrated graphics and the gtx plugged out. Try 1 ram each apart. Double check all cabling and connections, push them all down gently. double check the cpu and the paste on it.

Check for a short, is there any metal touching the back of your motherboard? Also test the ram sticks separately and make sure the motherboard doesn't require that you put the first 2 sticks in specific slots.

Its hero for the mobo.
I tried just one stick of ram and still nothing.
How can I tell if it's the mobo or CPU or psu that's bad?

CPU is almost never bad... Motherboard wouldn't show post codes or light up... and PSU wouldn't make a sound when it's on..

have you tried unplugging the videocard and using the internal graphics card to boot?

Yeah the mobo according to in manual should have a led light up when plugged into a power source. And the psu does nothing. Is it supposed to something when you plug it in?

Is there a switch on the back of the PSU, it might be as simple as hitting the switch.. How are you powering it on? Power button on motherboard or on the case (do you have the case connected to the motherboard to power it on?)

No only when booting the psu fan will start spinning. If the motherboard led stays off it is either motherboard or psu. Sometimes you need an electric outlet fully for a pc. If there is some other electronic device also in the outlet that is also power hungry it might interfere.

It needs BIOS 0609 to support that CPU

Core i7-4790K (4.0Ghz, 4C, HT, L3:8M, HD Graphic, 88W, rev.C0) ALL 0609

Just in case it isnt on the mobo already, use USB BIOS flashback to update the BIOS

The switch on psu is switched to on. There's a power button on the mobo that's how I'm trying to turn it on.

Usually on the motherboard there is a sticker that says which bios version it has. If it is below 0609 you need to flash it as Paul suggested.

When you say it won't post, what exactly happens? Do your PSU/CPU/case fans turn on? Are there any beeps? Do you get any video, or does your monitor just stay off?

it usually something like bios ver 0609. It might be on the sticker of the box the motherboard came in, or even on a sticker on your manual.

I cant find anything that says what bios version it has. Lets say it needs the new version. How do i update the bios?

Did you extract the file first then put it on a flash drive? And rename it if the manual said to

Then put it in whatever USB port? Then press the USB BIOS flashback button for 3-4 secs? Till it flashes?

Yes I downloaded the file changed the name of it and had the appropriate format for the USB. And nothing happens.
