Followed advice to uncheck box by use proxy server and was able to connect to internet again.

I use firefox, internet explorer, and Chrome. None worked. I had to uncheck the "use proxy server" box on two browsers. I donot think the other browser required a separate fix. In chrome I clicked the triple bar icon on the right and slected the "settings" option. On the bottom fo the next page there was "show advanced settings". This revealed network heading and a button "change proxy settings...". The popup has button on bottom "LAN Settings" . This produced popup that has the box to uncheck by "use a proxy..."

The other browser was similar. This box is hidden away!

Before changing this option I removed two recently installed...

That is really vague... What situation are you in and how are you posting here if you can't connect? For starters, make sure you don't have a static ip address unless one was assigned to you, use dhcp. Then check your ip address with "ipconfig /all" in cmd and make sure you have an ip address that makes sense, ex: an ip address in the same range as the routers address. Then make sure you can ping the router's ip address with "ping ipaddress" in cmd.

Going on to being unable to change the LAN setting, what setting are you using and do you have admin rights on your machine? Also are there any error messages?

Try to answer/run through some of that and we'll go from there.

an example ip address that should make sense would be 192.168.1.1 as the router and 192.168.1.48 as your machine, the important thing is that the last set of numbers is different and the remaining numbers are the same. Just in case you aren't familiar with ip ranges.

More questions to answer if you get a chance. Is this a windows laptop? Are you setting the browser proxy settings or the computer's proxy settings (reached through IE or the control panel). Please explain with some detail how you attempted to change the LAN settings and where/how your attempt failed. Is this a recent issue? Why are you using a proxy server and is it possible that the proxy server settings have been adjusted by malware? Have you recently scanned your pc for malware with a reputable scanner, I recommend malwarebytes if you haven't.

What you are describing is a classic malware takeover, run malwarebytes a few times in safe mode and everything should work fine, do at least one full scan after you run the quick scan. If you're concerned about security then you should reload the OS on that machine, but most installs (99%) are fine after a malwarebyes scan. I would also run a "sfc /scannow" in cmd after you get done with malwarebyes to check the system files for corruption and errors, good luck.

Are you still having problems with this? Like I said previously log into safe mode and install Malwarebytes, they also have a way to install on most infected machines in case the normal install gets blocked; then scan your system several times. If you have the know how and you don't have much installed on your system, a reinstall of the OS probably won't take much more time (if you have much installed it will take a long though, also don't forget to backup your data).

The link to download is: http://www.malwarebytes.org/downloads/#tools looked for the Malwarebytes Chameleon download.

Before changing this option I removed two recently installed program using control panel -> remove program. One program was webbar. I do not remember the other. One produced a bar on top ot the screen that looked like the top of a firfox window. I also had a popup that asked me if I wanted to install a fast web browser. I ignored the offer and did not even date to click the "no thanks" button. I suspect the problems were related.
I do not think malwarebytes, norton, or microsoft security essentials completely solved these problems. Norton may not have been up to date when system was infected. I am now using Microsoft security essentials. A full scan will run tonight.

If a program is viewed as viable it will be left behind by the malwarebytes scan, uninstalling all toolbars and similar software is a good idea and should be allowed if they are even close to viable programs.
