HDTV Makes PS3 Games Look Terrible

Hello,

I have an HDTV that I purchased a couple years back, it is a Vizio 26 inch lcd hdtv with the model number: VA26LHDTV10T

I sit about 3-4 feet away from my TV.

In most games I play, it makes the games look really bad and there are usually washed out graphics, jagged edges and everything. I have tried setting my PS3 settings to RGB Full and everything like that, but that doesn't help much and crushes blacks. It almost feels as if I am playing a PS1 game.

This is more noticeable in games that only play in 720P, and, in some games that play in 1080P like CoD: Black ops 2 and ghosts, the games look pretty good. However, I just bought Advanced Warfare and Destiny on the PSN store and they look terrible. Even though Advanced Warfare is able to run at 1080P it still makes the game look bad regardless. Destiny looks even worse since it can only run 720P max. Gta 5 is the same and looks terrible.

Here are some pictures / a video of GTA 5 and what I see:

This is the kind of graphics I am talking about in what I experience and this happens mostly in games that only run at a maximum of 720P, not 1080P. However, Advanced Warfare still runs in 1080P and looks bad so I'm not sure what is going on.

I also tried switching HDTV's and used an old Sanyo 26 inch HDTV DP26648. It looked a little better but not that good. I don't think the problem is my PS3 because like I said before, games that run in 1080P such as CoD ghosts and Black ops 2 look pretty decent.

I tried playing around with the settings of my Vizio tv and nothing really helped. I am using an HDMI cable and also made sure it wasn't switching resolutions in the games because when I switch channels it shows the resolution it is displaying at, so it is not downgrading to 480P or something like that.

Can anyone tell me what's wrong? I really wanted to enjoy Advanced Warfare and Destiny but they just look flat out terrible, just like GTA 5.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

well... theirs a few things that may help.

Over-scan should be off. with it on, the TV will scale the content to be around 10-15% larger than the screen, this will cause general blurriness of the image and will make aliasing more prominent.

set your TV's Gama correctly. some TV's will default to the wrong Gama curve for your input which could be what happening sense your describing a washed out image.

I will say this, the first video you have in there shows the screen stretched horizontally. It looks like your PS3 is outputting at 480i.

Also, the specs on that TV say: "1366 x 768 native pixel resolution Supported TV Formats: 1080i, 720p, 480p, and 480i" so if you are in fact pushing 1080p signal to the tv, perhaps it's trying to downscale it (and doing a lousy job). If you have your PS3 set at 1080p, even if a game only supports 720p, it will still upscale.

I would recommend setting your PS3 to output a max of 720p (settings -> display settings -> video output settings). It's about all your TV is capable of handling anyway. See if that improves the quality any.

I see I'm going to try that, however it won't let me select just 720p, I can uncheck 1080p and 1080i, but it won't let me uncheck 480p as it is greyed out with a check mark in it. Is there anyway I can uncheck 480p?

Also, how can the tv have a possibility of outputting 480i when it shows it it outputting 1080p/720p in those games when I look at the top right corner of the screen upon switching channels?

I tried setting the PS3 to output at 720P, however, it still looks pretty bad. Maybe it helped a little but it is not really that noticeable. I have tried playing with the TV settings like brightness, etc. but it still doesn't help much. =(
