Hi all,

First time posting and first time building, so I'm unsure of exactly where to place this query and if it need be moved I understand.

I've just finished building a new rig and it's my first build in 12 years, so I'm essentially new again. I've double and triple checked that every component is in place and managed to POST, get into BIOS and begin a fresh install of Windows 8.1 (legit, bought directly from Microsoft) from a USB stick. Where everything falls apart after that is beyond me.

Starting with specs directly from PCPartPicker:
PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/kfqCgs

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor ($299.99 @ Amazon)

Note: I had to boot with only one RAM module to start (in slot #2, per the board manual), and I selected XMP Profile 1 in BIOS because apparently with both modules in and the automatic profile set by default, I couldn't POST. I've still only got one stick of RAM in the machine.

I'm starting the machine with the following peripherals attached:
- External display connected via HDMI to the graphics card
- USB keyboard
- USB stick with Windows 8.1 deployment package

I'm able to begin my Windows installation (select language, keyboard layout, install location, etc). Windows copies the install files to my SSD and then I'm prompted to remove the USB stick and informed that the machine will automatically restart to continue installation. At this point, my computer does appear to restart, but after restart there's no signal from either the on-board graphics or the GeForce. My monitor flashes "monitor going to sleep" and after 20 minutes of seeing nothing happen, I hit the power switch to shut it off, then turn it back on again to receive a message to the tune of "Windows installation failed, please try again".

I have started to suspect the problem may lie in the way that the motherboard resets, because when I press the reset button on my computer, nothing happens. All the case cables are connected to the front panel header and are intact, and the power switch, power LED and HD LED all seem to work. However I don't know why that header would affect a soft reset anyway, so any suggestions would help.

One last note now that I'm thinking of it: Windows installer seems to be reading my SSD as Drive 1 and my mechanical storage drive as Drive 0. I assume it's related to the order in which I've plugged them into my SATA controller but I don't know if it's significant.

I think I may have anticipated you. I haven't actually disconnected either hard drive, but I've attempted the install on the WD first. Judging by the progress percentage, I have a few minutes before I'll know if that helps, and then if need be I'll try removing the WD drive.

Whats this ?? USB stick with Windows 8.1 deployment package

Is it from an ISO or something? Do you have a Win8 ISO? if you do you could try Rufus

Change the drive to a flash drive, the option under that to GPT fo UEFI computer, NTFS if this supports it. Enable it and secureboot if this is 64 bit. And enable AHCI

Then add the ISO. Wait for to finish then boot from it

I'll try to give Rufus a go if I run into further issues, but I don't have a Windows 8.1 ISO, nor know where to obtain a clean one - I avoid P2P shares of these things. So that may be a dead end for me.

What I did do is purchase 8.1 from Microsoft's online store, and they provided an installation utility that allows an upgrade to existing Win 7 systems OR (which I did) the creation of installation media; i.e., DVD or USB flash drive. I used a spare 4gb drive I had and that's what I'm using for the installation.

I'm currently attempting your first suggestion to install to the SSD without the WD drive installed. I've also realized that I had accidentally plugged the cables for the reset switch in backwards, so I flipped it around. I'll know momentarily if that's a viable fix.

Still no luck, but I've tried hitting reset while fairly quickly after boot, and I'm able to duplicate the problem. So I'm moving past reset issue and suspecting video problem. The monitor reports "No Signal" from the graphics card HDMI port after either a soft or hard reset. I know the card is still getting power since the light next to the 8-pin connector stays on. I've since pulled the GeForce out of the build completely and plugged my monitor directly into the motherboard HDMI port, but I get no signal at all.

So the problem seems to morph to essentially this: no onboard graphics at all, and PCI graphics that fail after a reset but work after a full power cycle. The sound like potentially two separate issues.

I'm going to try another 8-pin connector on the PSU next; is it worth it to try the next PCI-E slot?

Finally found the solution; feel kind of silly for not trying this first. Z87 is not immediately compatible with Haswell-refresh CPUs, at least not out of the box. The EVGA Z87 FTW was shipped with BIOS revision 1.09. I flashed to v1.11 and the problem was immediately resolved.
