So I know that with Win7 64-bit version that you can get upwards into the 192GB for RAM. Well I have and Acer/Emachines EL1850G-42W that I've acquired, did a fresh install of win7 Ultimate 64-bit on it. It still has the original 2GB of RAM in it but I'm looking into upgrading that. As I've looked all over online this board apparently taps out at 4GB. Why would that be for a board built on the 64-bit architecture and can I ignore that restriction and go with more say 8GB?

No you can add as much ram as the board says because this is the limitation set by the manufacturer. Also not all 64-bit versions of windows 7 allows up to 192GB of ram. Only Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate support 192GB. Home Premium supports 16GB and Starter and Home Basic 4GB.

Got it, like I stated tho I'm running Ultimate 64-bit. I did look more into it and stumbled across how these restrictions are imposed by the chipset installed on the mobo. In this case it's an Intel G41 Express. Initially on it's spec sheet Intel annotates that it supports up to 4GB of DDR3. But upon further googling I stumbled across this message
http://communities.intel.com/thread/24443
where it's mentioned to be an error on the spec sheet and supposedly will support more than the 4GB limitation. My best option I supposed would be to find a couple 4GB DDR3 sticks to borrow and test the waters before committing on a purchase.

In general g41 chipset goes up to 8GB of ram and I can verify that because I have a G41 chipset motherboard with 2x2GB DDR2 (Don't worry about my DDR2 ram my motherboard supports DDR2, chipset supports and DDR3) and I can go up to 8GB.

it's an emachine EL1850G(-42W) with an Intel G42 Express chipset. Celeron E3400 cpu also, but that doesn't figure in too much.

I think it's actually manufactured by AOpen but it's listed under emachines, which both of course were consumed by Acer.

Sorry, G41, not 42. Fat fingered that one. But like I was saying, the board gets it's instructions from the chipset, and it's been posted that Intel mis-printed the info on the chipset, so I'm assuming it can handle 8GB
