Is my Power Supply sufficient for my future build?

Hello!

I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to these things and need help determining if I need to purchase a new PSU or if my current one will be fine for my system intended for some gaming for Minecraft and World of Warcraft and other more demanding games like Dark Souls 2.

Low and behold a month after being recommended a XFX 550W PSU (Gold Certified) Power Supply for my FX-4100 Processor and other listed components below. I find myself ordering two new components which have already been ordered and are on the way!

I'm facing a slight panic feeling as I realize I might not have the wattage required for my incoming new component upgrade and I'm here to ease that panic feeling.

So here are my my following specifications below:

  • CPU Upgrade: FX-8350
GPU: 7870: PowerCooler 7870-Tahiti Le MYST Edition
    Motherboard Upgrade: GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ AMD 990FX
PSU: XFX 550W PSU (Gold Cert.)
    RAM: 8GB DDR3 1833Mhz
    HD: 5400 WD 500GB
    Fans: 3
    OS: Windows 7 64-Bit
    (No CD/DVD-Installed) (3-USBs)

Solution
I strongly disagree, the gold rated 550w xfx will be plenty for this build. The GPU is less than an r9 280. If you decide to heavily overclock your processor and GPU then youll need more power but that PSU has plenty of juice for you otherwise. Likewise, if you were pairing the cpu with an r9 290x you would need more power but for what you have you're fine. An ssd would make a nice future upgrade though as that 5400rpm HDD is probably holding you back

I would go higher on the PSU wattage (I wouldnt reccomend anything LESS than a 650 watt, Though that should suffice, but just so), SSDs are getting cheaper and cheaper id at-least suggest one soley for your games (180GB is plenty but more is better), and id go with a 7200RPM enstead of a 5400RPM HDD and AM3+ is nearing its end but i cant really fault that i myself am using AM3+, Otherwise it looks pretty good.

If the price is the same then of course go with a 650W otherwise why spend the extra money? The SSD will not make much difference in gaming except maybe a second or two load times between maps. The real benefit of the SSD is for the OS. 7200ROM over the 5400RPM is good but either one will work fine if you are on a budget.

I know but one guy suggested a 650W. No need for it as the 550W will be fine for all of that. Like you said if they decide to upgrade to a higher graphics car in the future maybe upgrade then.

I feel like iv shot myself in the foot with the XFX 550W PSU and should of went with the XFX-600W+ Bronze to secure future Overclocking/Upgrades. However I'm more at an ease for now and really just wanted to make sure the computer would run at all. Haha~

Now for the harder part - who gets the solution :p? First poster or plywrlws post shooting down the 650W suggestion which provided a little more juicy information. (Since I was considering a 980 in the future or something around that (looks like that wont happen without a PSU upgrade) Hence the bullet to the foot~

Also thanks for replying so quickly and helping me out on my panic!

I'm actually shot out on money from buying the MOBO+CPU xD But ill put that into considering for when I upgrade (which could be almost a year++) :| Iv been helped by tomshardware on everything these past few months and finally. I think if everything works out and just runs as it should, I'll hopefully be away and enjoying some games throughout the rest of the year and 2015.

Take Care!~ and thanks for the answers again everyone!
