So, i just ordered everything for a new pc build and i was wondering if i could plug in my old hdd after i install windows on the new hdd, boot from the new hdd and copy my files from my old hdd to my new one? I don't need to boot from the old one, i just need to be able to access it to copy files from it to the new hdd. It would be way more convenient if I could just copy the files like this and not have to copy them to an external hard drive first and then to the new hdd. Also, the old hdd has windows 7 and the new one will have windows 8.1.

Can i use an old hard drive with a new hard drive in a new build?

For the question, yes you can plug in the old drive along with the new one. Uninstall Windows 7 from the old one (data will remain intact).
