Hi

I have the HP Pavilion dv7-6b76eo. I have 2 internal slots for storage disks, currently only the 1 being used of my HDD, which is slow and sux! I want to slot in an SSD next to my HDD and have my operating systems on the SSD and the HDD as storage... pretty straightforward, eh? It is!

My only question is - does it matter about the SSD's model and producer? The Service manual PDF from HP for my PC (found here - http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03043778.pdf ) tells me only that my pc supports the HP 160 GB (665985-001) solid-state drive found here - http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?SearchText=665985-001 and it does not look too promising, in my opinion.

What if I want something else? How do I know if it will be compatible or not? I hear people complaining that SSDs they bought were not compatible. Would you recommend me any producer. Anything to stay away from or any specific producer of SSD that I should use for upgrading my HP Pavilion dv7-6b76eo?

PS
On my HP Pavilion dv7-6b76eo the processor and chipset are from Intel, not AMD, in case that is important to be mention in this context.

PS#2
As far as I have figured it out so far, it appears that the 2 internal slots for storage drives are not equal in the sense that the one is primary and the other secondary. Correct me if I am wrong in this, please. So ... once I buy the SSD on which I want my OS to be installed, I should slot that SSD into the place of my current HDD. And the HDD itself I should place into the spare slot and will use it only for storage/archive. Is all that correct or am I missing sth?

Thank you, both of you! I created the same thread in HP's own forum here http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Hardware-Upgrades-Replacements/HP-Pavilion-dv7-6b76eo-SSD-upgrade/m-p/4740080 and to my surprise the HP expert there told me 2 interesting things:

1. When I asked him what model and brand SSD to buy he said he had no luck with Intel, Kingston and OCz SSD's - but he believed many HP laptops use OCz Votex. I believe he had an HP notebook himself. So his advice may be useful in a way.

2. It was also from him that I discovered what I mentioned in my initial post about primary and secondary slots. He said he had not heard stories of people swapping the OS to the secondary slot thats why his suggestion was to use the primary slot for the OS drive and the other slot for the old HDD.

Please comment!!!

@bob hays - not true whar you are saying, mate! In my case it mattered which slot I used cos only 1 slot was physically labelled 'primary'. And there were no options in BIOS to switch which slot is primary and which secondary. So it stayed put ... i.e. could only put it in the slot labelled 'primary' cos when I put the ssd in the secondary one the PC would not be able to boot from it and it never let me reach BIOS and make any changes as to what is primary and what secondary ... hope this helps someone out there

sorry about that, the recent ones i've had let me choose, I assumed they would keep it consistent throughout their lines.
