I was able to get my hands on an Intel i7 4790 for around $200 (after coupons). I did look at some benchmarks regarding the performance of the 4790 (non-K version), but I am still a bit uncertain about some use cases (multithreaded programs, rendering, etc) in terms of how much faster the intel i7 would perform over the amd 8320.

Is the 4790 a giant step vs. the 8320? Or, are they equally as fast? Could the Intel processor cut on rendering times, even though its only 4-core with hyper-threading?

No problemo bud, heres 4.3 ghz vs 4.3 ghz. The i7 4790k comes out about 20% faster overall. the k makes all the difference! (i know it says @ 4.0 ghz but its turbo is listed as 4301 Mhz.

There's a definite improvement in video encoding, though it's not huge as that's one of the FX-8320's best areas. If you're using a high-end video card and do a lot of gaming you'll see huge gains there as the i7 can drive high-framerate gameplay a lot better.

the i7 will be somewhere around 10-15% faster overall if comparing just stock speeds. The 8320 isnt far behind at 4.3 ghz though. Here is a benchmark i just ran for ya with passmark performance test 8.0

FX 8320 @ 4.3 Ghz is about 9% slower than the i7 at 3.6 ghz is.

Yeah, I'll be mostly doing video rendering and virtual machines (3-4 at once).

The gaming gain would be a bonus, but it is tempting.... I just don't know if I'll have money to replace my mobo and gpu (right now its Asus GTS 250).

Thank you for this.

What if I were to return this and buy the K variant and overclock it to 4.3 GHz like the fx 8320 at 4.3 GHz?

Would the gain be much greater?

I definitely have to upgrade my GPU lol. Its currently an Asus gts 250. I've been eyeing an 970 for a couple weeks. I'm hoping for a sale.
