I don't know what to say .. you buy - you try - and hope you don't cry ...

all you can do is pick one and see if it works your good if not then you fight it in to work or go with another card ...

if you got computer shop you can take it to tell them what you want and let them worry about it if they get in what you want and it works 100% pay the man if they cant and fool around with a few cards just tell them oh well and go home cause you don't owe them nothing but a thanks for trying

Thanks for your reply and the specs are now included
I am not a big gamer but use the computer for videos and working - my daughter may want to start playing games so i guess its best to be prepared and set up when that happens - she is only 8 now
For a budget i guess i could do $200 or so

The psu i am replacing is only 350W and shuts off the computer randomly with a kernel power error - i am good at software but never played inside a computer before so i want to be sure everything will match up and work properly - i have read that some cards are not recognized by the bios so that concerns me

Warning! The Dell XPS 8700 series computer will absolutely, positively currently NOT work with Nvidia's newest and most powerful GTX 970 series and GTX 980 series video cards

http://forums.evga.com/Problem-with-EVGA-970-and-980-and-Dell-XPS-8700-see-thread-m2225350.aspx

just be dang sure it will support any card you want to use find hard proof it will before spending lots of money on it

some models of store bought computers [dell.hp,acer,ect..] may come with a ''locked or fixed'' bios and may not allow you to change certain hardware as a video card.. this is done to protect them from undue warranty claims and refunds .this is not done to hurt you but to protect them. you really need to see if that upgrade has been proven to work in your model first before you invest money in it .. there are a lot of these threads here at toms to look at some models will allow upgrades and some dont.. and a lot of guys here say ya ya ya when is really no no no...it would be sad you spent $200 on a card that wount post after you installed it as most find out. then get told its your psu and you spend more and end up right back where you are now, but its up to you good luck..

you got to know the the boards in these computers are not like the ones we use to do custom builds witch are open to upgrading with in the boards compatibly . the bios is custom made for there design and just for the parts they authorize to be used on there computers there only guaranteed to work as is out of the box as you bought it

This psu is already on its way as i bought it last week!
It came highly recommended and has a 5 star rating by lots of users.
Will this one work with the graphics card you recommended?
I am in Canada and this psu is coming from the US by UPS and should be here in a few days

Can you recommend a graphics card that should work with a 550 watt psu?

Man I am more confused then ever now
Just need a descent card upgrade that will work with my dell bios and handle up to 500 watt psu
Currently have a GeForce 240 with no HDMI slot

don't know if this is what you want but it seems its working in dells [read the reviews]

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487052

but as you see in one of the reviews one guy knows the score on a dell up grade

cant be recognized by my unupdate-able Dell 8300 bios. not EVGA's fault really but would have liked this fact to be more transparent. Had to RMA with newegg which they promptly honored after restocking fee and having to pay to ship back (cost me about $26 on the whole deal)
''recognized by my Dell 8300 bios Im sure I'd been very happy with this High Quality budget conscience card. *** Make sure you have newest most recent Bios update for your Mobo.''

This is what I will do as I have a computer shop down the street - thanks for the advice.
I am not sure what I am doing so leave it to the pros.

well the thing is if you buy a card and it don't work after you tried a lot of things to make it work then your stuck or got to rma or what ever and you may go through 5 cards with the same results m look at all that money and time spent ??

I wish I knew something better to tell you but I don't on this its all at your own risk
