no chance on going with anything more than core 2 quad, that is a ancient s775 chipset, while the gpu could fit, the cpu would be a massive bottleneck
This is not true at all. You can get a Xeon socket 771 and mod it to a 775 rather easily. Then all you have to do to make the processor fit is to use an Xacto knife, a box cutter, or a scalpel to cut away two tiny slots that would otherwise prevent the modded 771 Xeon fit. The actual mod sticker needed to convert the 771 Zeon to a 775 can be found on Amazon or eBay for around $1-$2 dollars. Video tutorials on how to do both mods can be found on YT. As for the Xeon processors, they were mostly made for server systems, Take for example the following Xeon processor. The Xeon 5080 CPU has
4M of L2 cache, has a base frequency of 3.73 GHz, and has a 1066 MHz FSB. This processor supports virtualization and hyperthreading, and is currently selling on eBay for $13.00 w/ free shipping.
Elf_Knight (or anyone else stumbling across this thread), compare your processor's specifications to that of the Xeon 5080's and see if the swapping would be worth it. For under $15.00 you can get a heck of a CPU upgrade that will be fully capable of running the GTX 970 and play games such as GTA V with an average FPS of 50+ (sometimes it's much higher, but rarely ever lower) on what is essentially high settings in 1080p resolution. The Xeon processors are breathing new life into the old 771 and 775 motherboards. Just check out eBay, for the "mod sticker" and the processor (again, will be under $15.00 total) and search on YT how to do the modification yourself. It's definitely a cost-friendly solution to aging hardware. Anyway, I wish you all the best on your now "budget" gaming builds that can still play Triple-A game titles smoothly at 1080p minimum.
