Hello friendly folks on TH.

I am going to try and make my days a bit more interesting with a hobby project. I'd like to create an offline wifi network at home attached to some kind of storage that will have all my movies. I don't want it connected to the internet , but would still like to connect perhaps to an IP address (like an intranet. I can get the PHP coded by my friend) and browse the titles and stream the movies.

1. We are a big family and we have quite a few devices. I also want visiting friends and family to be able to seamlessly access and stream the HD films. So the wifi router and the storage should be able to handle multiple devices streaming at the same time.

2. Can I host the the PHP files on the storage device?

3. What kind of storage device and router combination should I be getting? Can I get away by using a USB 3.0 pen drive or do I need faster storage like an SSD?

4. I'd like this entire setup to be cost efficient. Don't we all? :)

Thanks a ton,
Sid

If you want to do this you'll need to have a good wireless router. Preferably an AC Wifi router such as an Asus RT-AC66U. Even an N router will give you issues with multiple streams. Plus you'll need devices that can connect using AC Wifi.

Then I'd look into getting a Synology unit. You can pick a used one up relatively inexpensive on ebay. Perhaps something like a DS212 will do.

It has a browser based player as well as other plugins such as Plex Media, UPNP, and other protocols that make it perfect for this type of streaming. Many of your Roku style media players will be able to seamlessly connect to it.

Streaming movies, especially uncompressed HD movies on WIFI is usually more frustration than success. A NAS (what you want to create) is much more useful when connected via a wired connection. There are commercial NAS units with built-in WIFI but I wouldn't recommend purchasing any of them.
If you want to stream to multiple devices simultaneously, the ONLY answer is wired.
