Why don't front USB ports work with a lot of devices?

Hello there,I have this weird problem when I connect my ps3 controller to the usb ports in the front it doesnt work but when I plug it in the back it works same thing happens with Samsung Galaxy S3 when I plug it in it says that this USB device is not recognised.But the front USB ports work with a USB stick.Please help I have had this problem for so long. I have a Asus Z87-K motherboard.

Update:I have two USB ports in the front then one on the left doesnt recognise my S3 but on the right one it does but when I click on my phone in Computer it says This folder is empty.

I've read of issues with power supply via the motherboard to the USB ports. So devices that require high current may not operate well.

Not that I know of - unless you use a powered USB hub. But I don't know how to confirm that may be the issue.

There may of course be actual electrical issues that cause that as well. It's really hard to know at that level.
