Hi,

I'm buying a new ASUS PB278Q monitor to get a larger screen & better image quality for photo editing. I don't play games & I don't watch movies, I edit photos & do the usual non-intensive graphics stuff like web browsing & word processing.

I need a new graphics card to support the 2560 x 1440 resolution. I'm thinking a bottom-of-the line display card with 1 GB of memory will be fine. Is that right?

Also, with this use, will the card run cool or do they run hot no matter what?

Also, is there any reason to favor a card with a fan or a card with just fins?

Thanks,
Mike

I just purchased a Gigabyte GTX 750ti - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125502

The two main reasons I purchased this card:
1) Standard ports - I am not a "high end user", and my monitors are DVI/HDMI monitors - this card supports up to 4 monitors using no adapters for my monitors.
2) It isn't a major gaming card, but displays a lot better as compared to the integrated Intel HD4000 graphics. Huge improvement in display quality....

it depends on whether the software you use 'uses' the gpu for accelerated processing, like CUDA.

I also think that you need display port, as I'm pretty sure that the hdmi/dvi connection will only do 30Hz at 2560x1440, and that will be unpleasant to use even in windows. I'm trying to research that now, but it's not clear.

The 1GB of ram will be plenty, try using you onboard GPU any modern one should be sufficient.

13thMonkey,

Thanks for pointing out the DVI refresh rate problem.

Display Port would be a bad thing for me, since I actually have 2 PCs (one already has a Nvidia GeForce GT 720 2 GB display card) connected via a DVI KVM switch to my current display. I'd rather not spend even more money for the Display Port version of 2 new cards plus the KVM switch. But then I don't think I would like the 30 HZ refresh rate either.

Do you know what resolution I could get with DVI at 60 HZ?

Thanks,
Mike
