Usb Wireless network adapter slow download speeds

I recently bought and installed a TP-LINK TL-WN725N Wireless N usb network adapter for my desktop PC. I installed the latest drivers and went to test my download and upload speed. The results are bad. At first I was getting about 200 kB/s. But after some fiddling and moving the device to the front of my PC (and slightly closer to the router), I am getting speeds of about 900 kB/s, let's call it 1 MB/s.

Even at 1MB/s, I am still about 5 times slower than my laptop (5.2 MB/s), which I tested in the same room and location as my desktop. Upload speeds are about 4 times slower.

This is concerning, because I am about 25 feet from my router (between two closed doors, though even when both open, no noticeable difference) and my signal strength is excellent (5/5 bars most of the time, with slight fluctuations to 4/5 bars).

Any advice? The product packaging says it's good for speeds up to 150Mbps.

Thanks community.

Hello CTrap33!

USB ports have a slower transfer speed compared to a hardware directly plugged onto the motherboard, so that could be a factor in the slow speeds.
Another thing could be that the USB Wi-Fi antenna is not a good one, or the router is not a good one.

If you believe that you have a good router, you could try to return and get an exchange, but I don't think it would be any better. (I've used USB network adapters before and they were not as good as I expected them to be)

I recommend you get an internal network adapter that connects to a PCI-E slot directly on your motherboard, preferably ASUS branded, as they manufacture pretty good quality ones.

Let me know if I can help you more.

Thanks for the response!
This is my PC build

I was thinking about buying this adapter since it has fairly good reviews and is cheap:

Pretty sure this will fit in my PC, correct? Any other suggestions? Did you have a particular ASUS card in mind?

Thanks again
