Hello I have just built a gaming system and my cpu has been running very hot even at idle. I have bought a aftermarket cooler knowing that th ones that come with it suck so I bought a Effizio silent x 80 mm cooler. After applying a pea sized ammount of included thermal paste and installing it correctly the idle temp was 35 degrees t which isnt bad but as soon as I open a program it jumps to about 50 degrees Celsius and in a game such a farcry 3 its at 74 degrees Celsius I have tried re seating the heat sinc and have tried the stock cooler with no success. Is it a faulty cpu making it run hot or is it bad thermal paste or a sucky heat sink please help!

When dealing with an APU, it is sometimes hard to get an accurate core temp with 3rd party software. He best way to verify core temps with an APU is by using AMD's Overdrive: http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4645-amd-overdrive.html
Run it and go to CPU STATUS. Check what the Thermal Margins are for the cores. TM is the distance remaining until the CPU reaches the point where it will throttle back its speed to cool down. At load, the TM should still be in the double digits to have sufficient headroom remaining.
Her is a better explanation of what I mean: http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2122665/understanding-temperature-amd-cpus-apus.html

What is the "load" you are using? Run something like prime95 and watch the TM.
Yes, the reading s under AMD overdrive is the only sure way to read temps. The fan speed might be a setting in BIOS. They will then take a few seconds to a minute to lower their speed.

That's a pretty weak cooler with its 2 small heat pipes. But it should be better than the stock AMD cooler.

I'm not sure FC3 is all that CPU intensive. That may be a GPU limited game. Can't remember.
The APU has a throttle limit. When it hits or gets near 0 TM, it will start to slow its clock speed to cool down. As far as the board itself, I don't know. Check your manual and in BIOS.

Can you post a pic of that? No, that's not normal. That thermal margin would be higher than the safe temp range. The CPU can never be colder than room temp. Add room temp to the TM of 70C and you are way out of range. Your APU may have a bad sensor.

Next time you boot, enter BIOS and tell me what the CPU temp is after it sets idle for about a minute. It will be higher than in Windows, because the CPU is always at full speed. No reduced clock in BIOS.

Ok in the BOIS it said that the cpu after about 3-4 minutes of letting it sit, it reads 35 Celsius. when at the desktop and having this window open speccy says that it is at anywhere from 45-55 celsius. amd overdrive says that the tm is still 70-65 in this web page. my room temp is a little cold but it is around 60-65 Fahrenheit. here is the photo of both amd overdrive running and speccy running and they are both saying completely different things. http://i1378.photobucket.com/albums/ah106/busterofsouls/20141124_173629_zpsb8e72c81.jpg

That is indeed strange. I wouldn't have any problem ignoring Speccy. All the APUs I've worked with have had an issue with common 3rd party temp software. But the fact that AOD is showing a TM of 70C is crazy. The max temp for the A8-6600K is 74C: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Bulldozer/AMD-A8-Series%20A8-6600K%20-%20AD660KWOA44HL.html
The thermal margin should be around 30C less than that at idle. I would expect to see the TM at around mid 30Cs to mid 40Cs at idle. I'm stumped.

Try this app for temp. It has always been pretty close for APUs in the past: http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/
(click on the 'more downloads' link and choose the stand alone for your OS. Otherwise you will get some un-needed bloatware)
It will attempt to display actual core temperatures.

ive tried calling tiger direct but the people they have on customer service are horrible at English and i couldnt understand them. but going back to the BIOS it seemed like it read it correctly should i just leave it or would you recommend sending it back to get a new one

Oh, Tiger. Yeah, I have had to experience their support before too. Not the best. Took me forever to get them to understand what I wanted. If you can get it replaced, I would do that. But yes, the BIOS for some reason is reading correctly... apparently. If you can live w/o the CPU for the length of time it will take to get a replacement, I'd do that. If you have the extra cash, just order a new one and then return the old one for refund when the new one comes. That's the way I usually handle RMAs.

I guess the thermal sensor is bad on my 860K too then. At I idle I get 70C Thermal Margin. I cant find the maximum operating temperature for my CPU. The 7850K is 72.4 C so I guess my 860K would be about the same?

This question is to you clutchc.

If my ambient/room temperature is about 20 C, and the max operating temperature is 72.4C can my Thermal Margin be 70C at idle? I don't think things add up correctly.
