Do you Still Need the Disk if you Linked a Game to Steam?

If I were to buy a game from EB Games (GTA 5) and linked it to my steam account, would i need to put the disk into my computer every time i wanted to play it? Or could i just click Play Now, on steam, without the disk?

I do realize that GTA 5 is not out for PC yet. I used it as an example.

When I say "tie to Steam," I mean the game gets registered through Steam and is tied to your account forever (or for the forseeable future).

This would only happen if you bought the game new because the code used to activate the game can only be used once.
