Graphics card safe temperature

Hello.
Here's a very simple question I've been getting a lot of controversial answers to;
What is the safe temperature limit for a graphics card (MSI GTX 970 4g to be specific)?

I've had this thing for a month now and I overclocked it myself. When I play very GPU intensive games, such as Assassin's Creed: Unity, Watch_Dogs and Far Cry 3 (not trying to promote ubisoft here), the temperatures can peak up to a max of nearly 82 °C, with an average of sometimes up to 78 °C. Is this too high and could it do any harm? If so, how severe and how likely would damage to my graphics card be?
FYI, when I'm just doing random crap on the internet, it never gets above 50 °C after having cooled down from a game.

Cheers,

When gaming hard, I get between 60-70 Celsius with my Gigabyte GTX 970, and I idle with 30-40. I think 82 is a bit on the hot side. It is safe but definitely not where I think you would want your GPU to be.

Can you elaborate on the reason as to why I wouldn't want my GPU to be on that temperature? Is it very damaging?

It definitely can be. 90 Celsius Is when your GPU is getting way too hot. Even if your card may be able to work under those temps, there is a good chance something could happen.

It'll never reach 90 degrees. The highest peaks I've had after 2-3 hours of ACU are 82, with averages still under 80. Also, what could happen if I ignored this?

As long as the temps do not rise any higher, you should be fine. The life span of your card may be reduced by a bit since it does not seem to be able to stay cooled adequately.

Just keep an eye out for temps at all times and you should be fine. But it is odd that you have temps that high.

Is it odd even for a +150MHz (memory +500MHz) overclock in Afterburner?
