ASUS Z97-Pro + 4790K - Red CPU Light, "00" Debug Code

Hi guys,

I finally got 'round to upgrading (aged) my PC, and it all went well until I poked the power button. :(

When I powered it on for the first time, the fans span briefly (pulsed), and then stopped. After a few seconds delay, everything started spinning again (as though it has reset itself). Looking at the motherboard, the debug panel reads "00", which according to the manual is not used. Of the status LEDs on the motherboard, the DRAM LED is lit green, the CPU LED is lit red, and the GPU/Boot Device LEDs are off. There's no signal to the monitor, either from the GPU or the iGPU.

Does it look like I've been exceptionally unlucky and got a dud CPU/motherboard? Or could it be something else?

Any ideas gratefully received. :)

P.S. Relevant specs:

Solution
When they tested your MB, they should use the compatible cpu to test, you can call them to confirm that, after you replace the MB, and you will be fine.
Most likely you need the new BIOS, because from asus website, the MB need 1008 version BIOS at least to support the i7 4790K. You can use the 'USB BIOS flashback feature", info http://event.asus.com/2012/mb/usb_bios_flashback_guide/ video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVvHwq3syqI

1) Download the BIOS to the USB drive, you need format USB to FAT16, FAT32 or NTFS before download the BIOS.
2) Rename the BIOS file to XXXXP.CAP Check out the link for example. http://event.asus.com/2012/mb/usb_bios_flashback_guide/
3) Only connect the 24pin +the 8pin power connectors+ the USB, not RAM, HDD, CPU. To do the BIOS update.

If you already did this BIOS update, then the problem maybe from other parts.

Thanks for the reply. I've used USB Flash Back to update the BIOS to 1304 (5th August), and tried it without the GPU ... still no go :(

Any other ideas as to what it might be? Everything looks like it's plugged in correctly, and I'm sure I installed the CPU correctly ...

1) Test the PSU by paper clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixcWCrYpw3Y
2) If the PSU works. Try this troubleshooting ideas http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/261145-31-perform-steps-posting-post-boot-video-problems
3) Or even try this Bench it - Troubleshooting http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-1753671/bench-troubleshooting.html

If it still does not work, the problem may from MB or cpu, and if you don't have other compatible cpu or MB to test, you either go to local pc shop ask for help or RMA them.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what exactly is this testing? The reason I ask is that when I power it on, the PSU fan starts spinning, the case fans spin up, and I can hear the HDD spin up, so I'm wondering if that's enough of a check, or if I need to do the paper-clip test too..?

Other than taking it out of the case and dropping down to one stick of RAM, I've tried all of those.

I'll have a word with the supplier, and see if I can get them to test the board with another CPU.

You don't have to do the paper clip, because just make sure PSU works.

Because you said the cpu led is red, and the GPU/Boot Device LEDs are off. And do you try boot the PC with cpu only w/o other hardware. If the pc does not boot, that means either cpu or mb has problem, also you said the seller will test your mb or cpu, that is good news because it is best way to test by using other compatible cpu or MB.

Thanks. Didn't know if it was just testing that it would supply some power, or testing that it responded to a particular trigger.

I've had a word with them, and they've suggested that the motherboard may be faulty, and to replace it. I guess if that doesn't work, then it's the CPU ...

Tried a replacement motherboard yesterday, and it booted through to the BIOS fine, so I assume it should be OK. So, either the first motherboard was faulty, or I managed to fail to plug one of the plugs in fully more than once.

Thanks for your help! :)
