Solution

8x/8x is enough . i7 4790K beats i7 4820K with 40 lanes , in games There are other lanes in addition to these , Usually 8 - Z97,H97,Z87,H87, B85 . .. H81 chipset has 6 lanes .For 3 cards , i would get i7 5930K but the price of the rig gets too expensive .

im debating between the msi mpower or the asus z97 a they both seem to have about the same spec. the only thing that catches my eye about the msi is the water cooling feature. since my rig is water cooled

Is the over clocking capabilities any lesser on lower end boards?? I was looking at the msi gaming 7 board it costs 170 and then there is the asus z97 pro for 210 msi mpower max for 249 the msi gaming 9 is like 280 all these boards have 3pcie slots and i believe the highest they can go in gpu is sli or cross fire. Idk why some are more expensive than others. I'm planning on getting the i7 4790k. I have 2 gtx 760 12 gb of crucial balistix tracers the evga 1000watt supernova a 250 gb ssd a 1tb hdd. I have a custom water loop including my gpu . I'm looking for a good board that's great for overclocking and great for gaming thats sli compatible. My budget is about 300 for the board but i don't want to burn that much if i can find a awesome board for a lil less

Asus Z97-A and Asrock Z97 Extreme 4 are great . You will benefit nothing from 3 PCI-E slots . 4790K has 16 PCI-E lanes hence x8/x8 . NVidia dosnt allow x4 speed at SLI , so you want have 3 cards in SLI . Go with either of the two boards i mentioned in this post .

ah ok so i wouldnt even be able to go 3 way with that chipset. i didnt look up the specs. my old i7 920 has 36 lanes i belive. so since i only have 16 lanes if i run both gpus at 8x each and use an expansion slot or something witht that use some of my lanes and lower the performance??

ah ok thanks for clarifying i would upgrade to but its to expensive at the moment. the board the cpu and the ram are more than enough to bankrupt me lol. ive upgraded almost every component on my pc all i was missing was my cpu and board. it still runs great but im ready for an upgrade. i was looking at the maximus 7 but god its so expensive, it dosent seem to offer a lot more for the pricing. the only thing that catches my eye on that board is the armor and the included water block for the vreg.
