Hello Guys ! I'm here on a very specific quest, I have a problem with my computer. Well, I work in PC Support, and I have an Idea of what can be, I just want to know what you guys think and tell me what I should do (I'm on vacations, not working right now, so I need opinions).
Well, my PC is as follows:
ECS A-785 GM-M7
AMD Phenom II x4 955
2x2GB Ram
AMD HD 6870
Corsair VS450 (This one has like 3 months old)
HDD, etc.
So, I was Rendering an HD Video when my Computer Froze. It took me like 60 seconds to decide to press the Reset Button. When the PC froze, I could hear the sound of the Hard Drives like booting up, first I heard like a 'click' and the the sound of the HDD stating to spin. Then, Reset the PC. Then I just got a Black Screen and the HDD Led stuck on Red. No video. So I decided to turn it off. Then, wait a few seconds and try to Turn it on, but nothing happens. Opened the case and press the power button, but the CPU seems like wanting to spin just won't. The failure was similar to the one when my old PSU died (only that time the PC didn't froze, just turn off) so I tried with another PSU and then again nothing happens (the last time with this PSU the PC started, that's when I bought a new PSU). So, before I start running in circles screaming, I decided to take off the CPU Cooler, and that's when I saw it, the most irresponsible thing I saw in years, and it was all my fault, the paste, this gray thing (I don't know how you call it in english, but you understand right ? That thing that i'm thinking on buying tomorrow an Artic Silver) Yeah, that thing was so dry, so dry that came off in little like pieces that broke when I press them. And actually the CPU was so hot that I could fry an Egg.
Now, the question is: Experts, do you think I burned my CPU ? Is there still hope ?
I have not tried anything else because I don´t want to keep testing without that thing. But I need an opinion, please. I don't think I killed it, but I need opinion from colleagues.
It's 2am here in Chile and there's nowhere to buy now. Tomorrow in the morning i'm going and I want to believe. I'm saving for a new platform, but I have not nearly enough for CPU+Mother (something decent). So, what do you guys think?
I really want to believe that doing a Ccmos and applying that grey stuff everything will be just OK. What you say ?
I checked the MOBO and there's no problem with any capacitor and the CPU has nothing visible.
So please, tell me I have Hope.
I´ll be in touch. See you guys. Thanks for helping me.

Solution
1. It's called Thermal paste / Thermal Grease
2. I'd start there, but if all you are getting is a black screen, then ya, i'd imagine that your processor is fried.
3. If after you get some grease on there, it somehow posts, but doesn't boot, then i'd venture to say your HDD died.

TLDR: would try grease first, if that doesn't work, processor is likely dead.
