Hello guys, I'm new to this forum. And had a question about this project I'm doing.

SOME BACKGROUND INFO: I volunteer as a service worker and IT person for the local charter school. I had this 13yr kid come up to me and ask for a favor to look into his PC. Its an old HP DC7900p desktop. He got this system from the local library as they were throwing out old systems. (His uncle works there) He said he loves gaming so as a Christmas present I wanted to help him play some PC games by upgrading the system. His family is really poor and he has never got a chance to play cool games. (Sorry for the long story)

The desktop specification is as follows:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0 ghz
RAM: 8 GB DDR2 800MHz (PC2-6400)
M/B: Intel Q45
Graphics: On board
Power Supply: Default 365 W

My upgrade plan. Money I can contribute for Zachary(that's his name) <=$100
CPU: I am going to attempt to overclock the stock processor to 3.3~3.4 GHZ as E8400 are quite stable. (Since the bios is locked I am going to try via software) Any advice??
For graphics I got a pretty good deal through ebay for a XFX HD7850 1GB Core Edition ($60)
Power Supply: To fit the budget I went for a Sentey 600W PSU($30)

Now for this work I also bought a PCI express extension cable ($5). The motherboard has two PCI express slot right next to each other. A black X16 and a white X16 slots but the white runs X4 electrical so I cant use that. Since, XFX is a bulky card , the CPU fan comes in the way while installing. I should have bought a less bulky card but I got excited and didn't double check. The seller won't accept returns.

So I plan to use an extension cable and put the card on the very end of the case which gives me room to put the card and still able to connect it to the PCIe 16 slot. I have couple of PC games that I own and I can give it to him. Let me know what you guys think about this project.( IMO I feel like this system will be able to handle games at good resolution and medium-high settings).Your feedbacks will be highly appreciated.

SIncerely,
Sabdeth

Solution
great project... also you dont need to oc the cpu... it can handle the 7850 without bottlenecks

i suggest you to put some good fans in the case and replace the old ones.... good luck
