I've

  • 1 EPSON USB printer (BX305F).
    1 USB 2.0 cable (1.5 mt)
    1 Dell studio 1555 laptop (3 USB ports 2.0)
    Vista(32bit) Home Premium SP2 full up-to-date

I've a clean Vista set-up with all the drivers and BIOS perfectly installed (and in the order suggested by Dell site).

[I came to reinstall Vista as a last attempt to see if maybe I succeeded that way

I'd like to install the printer with the official Epson CD (also tried with the last drivers version from Epson site)

I start with all the peripherals disconnected (even my USB mouse)

At the point to connect the USB cable and turn the printer on, the procedure is not able to complete and

no USB connection is established. (USB device not recognized)

All the 3 PC USB.2.0 ports have been tried for this.
All the 3 PC USB.2.0 ports are ok (any other USB device works on them)
Printer and cable are both ok and perfectly connected (restarting with a live Ubuntu distro I print at 1st attempt)

I've tried more times the sequence

  • 1/4) (uninstall epson driver) +
2/4) (uninstall each USB listed in device manager) +
    3/4) (PC restart) +
    4/4) (reinstall epson driver)

but stll when reaching step USB-cable-connection-&-print-turn-on to complete the installation the printer is not seen.

I've noticed there is never an option other than LPT1 ...4 /COM1 ...4/File / XPS in the Ports drop-down list. My not-installed printer icon (BX305F) is there in the Control-Panel-printers section. I'd like only to attach it to a valid port (something like USB001) from the list but there's not a choice.

This is driving me crazy !!!!!! What is it wrong ???????

Thanks in advance for any helping issue.

Solution
Hi Veronica!
A year agoI had something similar happen when i tried to install a hp 3inOne printer on to my Toshiba Laptop, Vista Premium SPK2.
The reason for my problem was my Antivirus & Firewall software. It somehow didnt like me to install the drivers and didnt give me notice about this..
I followed the advice of a friend:
I went offlne and temporaroly disabled the Virusprotection and Firewall ....and....the installation still didnt work....lol....
I have Norton360. But when I clicked the "settings" tab and additionally disabled the "Norton Tamper Protection" the installation all of a sudden workd perfectly fine.
Software sometimes works in mysterious ways...;-)

Almost them.
My printer is the cheap version (no Wi-fi) so only BX305F and not BX305FW
I found them here
http://esupport.epson-europe.com/ProductHome.aspx?lng=en-GB&data=FCFfEfoyEiFNF5cnf6Av7pNaWonwtHxCBFa4U002FGnb6hsU003D&tc=6
Anyhow you gave me the idea to try also something new
Maybe the wi-Fi version can wake Vista up for some magic
Thanks

----------------- Ok nothing special with the wi-fi driver attempt.

I've instead discovered that most of the chipset as well as of the ICH9 usb drivers
were not the last available as I was trusting according to Dell
http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/product/studio-15/drivers
(really bad service from Dell site)

I let "Drivers Booster" to update all.

After some more reboots + removing Epson drivers + reinstalling them again from scratch
I've obtained the following strange behaviour:

1. plug the printer USB cable into any free USB port
2. this produce a 1st Vista msg, (the usual) "USB Device Not Recognized"
3. and a bit later a 2nd Vista msg "UNKNOWN DEVICE INSTALLED The software for this device has been successfully installed"

So now it is
Device Manager -->
USB -->
Unknown device --> Driver status:"No drivers are installed for this device. "

and clicking "update driver" (from disc or from the online option it's the same)
you get
"The best driver Sw for your device is already installed
Windows has determined the driver Sw for your device is up to date."

How can I suggest Vista to reconcile with itself ?

I was even on the way to start debugging the Win USB stack
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/jj151572%28v=vs.85%29.aspx
but I think I spent too much time after Vista .... really a very bad os!!!!

Thank you friend.
Unfortunately the fix that worked for you, did not for me. After my Vista clean re-installation, the Epson installation came before any othet 'external' SW (antivirus included), also Windows defender and firewall were set off. Yes SW works in mysterious ways, but only for Vista having an Epson printing needs to enter into a mystery. I've gparted my HD, allocating Ubuntu. (Connect)+(power-on)+(print) is just a matter of seconds.
I would then close the item. As it worked for you, I'll marked your hint as a solution
Thanks again. ;-)
