does 4gb of ddr3 dual channel =8gb?

i just bought a laptop with 8gb of ram but i tested it out on many programs but it says that i have only 1 memory slot with 4096mb of ram is this normal?

No 4GB of dual channel is not 8GB of RAM. Dual channel ram means that two sticks of RAM can "communicate" faster and easier. 4096 mb in one stick means you only have 4 GB of RAM in there.

ok but when i test my specs on many programs like passmark speccy and CPU-Z they all say i have 8gb of ram even my system properties says i have 8gb of ram ....but they also all say i have only 1 slot of memory with only 4096mb of ram and my laptops brandnew

ok thanks i tested it out on CPU-Z PASSMARK ASTRA32 SPECCY AND THEY ALL CAN FIND ONLY 1 MEMORY STICK WITH 4096MB OF RAM .....BUT I TESTEDIT OUT ON BELARC ADVISER AND IT SHOWED MEMORY SLOT 1 AND 3 BOTH HAVE 4096 LOL WHATS GOING ON

Open it up and look for yourself. Be careful and read your warranty as opening it up may void it.
