The only bad thing ive heard about 970 is a coil whine, so thats pretty much my only concern.

gtx 970 is worth it against 290 for sure , if you are choosing between them
but for an upgrade from an existing 290 i dont recommend..

The 970 = 290x.
It is quite a bit faster than a 290, and is a lot more power efficient.
Look at benchmarks, only you can decide if it's worth $100 more.
