SO I am going to upgrade my old PC, and the things I want to play are
Team Fortress 2
Battlefield 3
Black Ops 2 and maybe some other new CoD.

So I am going to get intel no matter what, because I need that single core performance for TF2, because thats the main game I play.

So should I get Pentium G3420/3258 or just save for cheap i5?

I am poor student, so everything I can save, is great.
I don't need to run battlefield on super high settings, just like playable medium is good enough.

tl; dr, Cheap i5 or Pentium G for poor student?

Solution
I would definitely get a cheaper i5 over the Pentium but if cost is really a restraint, you could go with a Pentium. You will start to see a noticible performance drop in games like BF3/BF4 that are pretty CPU intensive. The i5 will perform better than the Pentium or just as good in single core performance. i5 is the choice for gaming.

well as toms says the i3 is just failing to keep up in newer games.. but it does matter the gpu you will match it with

What gpu are you going to use?

Hi
The i5 only if you have the money for the GPU
If you don't have enough money for getting a decent GPU with going with i5, go with an FX 6300
Example :
FX 6300 + GTX 770 > i5 4440 + R9 270X
