GPU upgrade, from HD 6870 to what? (GTX 660 vs GTX 760 vs R9 270x)

Hello!
For some time now, I'm bothered with this problem. I stopped to follow the new advancements in PC hardware and now, when I'm about to make a decision, I feel lost. I want to upgrade my PC to make it more suitable to playing games in HD resolution (1920x1080). At the same time, I'm no hardcore gamer, nor a hardware freak (well, I'd love to be, but I can't afford to be one). I'm just your casual, regular gamer, who wants to enjoy a lagless game from time to time.

I would like my card to be the best choice for the money, considering the rest of my PC and the new GPU's "lifespan". But before that, the rest of my specs:

i5 2500
6GB RAM
and a sufficient power supply.

These are the GPUs I'm considering to buy.

GTX 660 (around 190 USD)
GTX 760 (around 254 USD)
r9 270 (around 185 USD)
r9 270x (around 240 USD)
r9 270x with 4GB RAM (around 185 USD)

The prices are rough calculations based on PLN to USD exchange.

Personally, I'm leaning towards the GTX660 (which has a surprisingly decent price tag). I believe that the boost in performance should be significant and the GTX660 will be a good price (paired with by CPU) for another 2-3 years. My only worry is that it seems a bit outdated.

Or should I go with a newer GPU.

On a side note, what difference will the 4GB RAM on the r9 270x make?

Cheers!

The 280 is probably the best bang for buck card going - if its same price or lower than a gtx760 the its the best choice.
The x on amd cards means they're the same chipset but with extra shader units (10-20% more powerful)
The 280 is a bang on card though - a true high/ultra setting performer.

The R9-270X doesn't have enough raw performance to utilize a full 4GB of video memory, so the point is moot. For the money you're best off going with an R9-280. But I'm not familiar with Polish sites. It works like this for performance, so you cant sort the money concern out yourself

GTX 660 > R9-270 > R9-270X > GTX 760

For my money, I'd go with none of these cards at this time. I'd instead look to as I said an R9-280 for additional performance, but also a progressive 3GB of video memory that can be fully utilized.

Or just buy a GTX 760 MARS Edition, which is a Dual GPU

First of all, thank you for answering. I overlooked the fact that there's the R9 280 3GB RAM roughly the same price as a GTX 760 (Gigabyte's 280 is quite cheaper (around 20 bucks); an MSI version is exactly the same price as an MIS GTX 760). The additional RAM seems like a good pick for the future, aka "expanding the lifespan" of the card. After a short survey, it also seems a better choice than the 4GB 270x. Does it?

So you'd recommend that I go with the R9 280? (Also, does the "x" after the number change much in terms of performance to justify the price difference)?

Sammy, the card you've mentioned isn't available here in Poland, so that's unfortunately out of the question.
