Hi, this is my first time trying to use a usb wifi adapter inside a vm, I'm using windows 7 profession, then kali linux in the vm. So I can't seem to even get kali to detect it, my adapter has a little green light that flashes. but it pretty much hasn't done anything. The adapter won't even show wifi networks on the windows 7 machine. I know vms will treat wlan like a Ethernet connection inside a vm, but I heard that usb drives get treated as independent devices and can't be shared. So I can't find the adapter anywhere in kali. Me and my neighbor also share our internet atm so I don't have a wired connection available atm.

My neighbor is also my friend who gave me the info already, and I need kali to do my lab work for school. I also have my own router at home with wifi that I will be doing the testing on, it just isn't currently active since I moved. I just need to figure out how I can use my wifi adapter in the vm. I'm using vmware and it isn't seeing the usb adapter at all.

Well, as Skittle said, you should use a native install rather than a VM. Kali is a very specialized distribution designed for network professionals, and is not really intended to be used in a VM. It requires a great deal of knowledge to use it safely.

I already found the solution sorry, it was an issue with some configurations on my host os, and some configurations on the vm side. I know how to use kali, it just was something new with the vmware since my instructor only wanted us to use vmware esxi. So I just had to uninstall the driver from my host machine, and then plug in the adapter once I got the vm up and running. Just took a bit to get it mounted for some reason, but is working so I'm able to finish my school work now. Also if you use vmware you should plug it back in once it has loaded, then go to removable devices, ('Your usb adapter'), then go to disconnect from host. then it will ask you are you sure you want to disconnect from host and to vm, and you are done. In case anyone else ever finds this.
