Hi All

I have am looking to build a new gaming PC in the next month.
I was considering between the GTX 760 and the R9 280, however from reading reviews it seemed obvious that the R9 had better performance.

However I have been recommended the GTX 750 Ti, even though it does not perform as well as the others but the price of running the card is very cheap.
The cost of running a 750 Ti vs R9 280 is so large that it might make more sense to just use a little lower performance than to pay more electricity bill.

A friend of mine helped me do the calculations.
Here is what we found

GTX 750 Ti is £30 cheaper to buy
GTX 750 Ti is £40 cheaper per year to run.
So end of the first year there is a saving of £70 (£30 from GPU and £30 from energy)
GTX 760 is just less in performance of the R9 760 but more expensive.
However after using the GTX 760 for 2 years, it would that becoming cheaper due to the cost of running the R9 280

Here are the calculations: http://goo.gl/wfTNCd

I would love to hear your opinion on this,

While being an interesting and different approach to buy a video card, at the end of the day one invest in a dedicated video card looking for the best gaming experience possible, and from those 3 cards the R9 280 clearly is the only one that will give you that for the next 2-3 years (and 2 more years playing at mid settings), investing now in a gtx 750 Ti will deliver you only mid/low graphic details for like 2 years, afterwards you'll be in the need to get a new video card anyways...

I agree with radikal, the only other i can think of is the 4gb version of the 760 if you can find it for a good price. Still the r9 280 will be cheaper and perform very well. My 280 runs at 60c @50% fan speed and is clocked to 1180/1500 stock voltage and gets around 90-140fps in battlefield 3. Its a good card for $200 usd.

I am in the same boat but I will say my 750 Ti does most games on 1600x900 on med to high with decent fps no constant 60s but 40s works for me and looks plenty nice(BF4 plays mostly on ultra but dont know how, and gets 50-60fps online.) for the power to consumption ratio I LOVE the 750 ti.
Over clocks really well too.

Running GTX 750 Ti myself, sure you cant expect highest settings or anything but when it comes to places where electricity is expensive, Maxwell architecture makes miracles! Radeon took a raw power approach but also slowly pulling away from it (thir latest R9 285 is WAAAAY more efficient than R9 280 or R9 280X)

From owning both a 780 ti and a 750 ti, I think the 750 ti is a great little card!

I've ran all of my games on both cards, the drop in fidelity isn't much at all. You'll be happy with the 750 ti if you're looking to save money. It can run any game with the right settings, and that's really saying something. There are a lot of GPUs that just can't run things at the lowest settings, but you'll at least be able to game on the 750 ti.

There are great deals on it today also. The other cards you mention have older tech in them too, so I'd go with the 750 ti to at least hold me over until you can afford to run a big-dog graphics card. Maybe by then, the next generation card will be out anyway.
