Android Play Store Won't Connect

Hi,

I have an Android Nexus 4. Recently I find that when I enter the Play Store I get the message "Check your connection and try again" even when I have good phone & WiFi connectivity. When I run TripIt Pro and try to update I get a similar message, but if I turn WiFi off it works. Evernote and Flight Tracker do the same thing. Turning off WiFi doesn't make the Play Store work: I can't make it work at all, even to see my installed apps. Everything else I've tried (Chrome, news browsers, email, search) works fine when WiFi is available. Rebooting doesn't help. Any idea how to fix this?

shahbaz200,

I cleared the data for the 3 apps as you suggested, tried again without success, rebooted, and tried again also without success.

Also, I've noticed that Evernote will sync only when WiFi is off, just like TripIt Pro.

shahbaz200,

I cleared the cache for the phone (Settings -> Storage -> Cached data), turned Airplane mode off & on, and verified that the time & date are right. When I tried Play Store and Evernote they both were still broken.

Go to https://play.google.com/store?hl=en from your device. Try to download/update any app. It will ask you to complete action using either Play store, internet, or any other browser. Choose internet and it will redirect you to put in you email and password for my Google play account. Put these info and see if your playstore works. If not then:
Go to settings --> Accounts, Add new--> Google --> try new if you have else existing --> login again and try to use your playstore again.

shahbaz200,

From Chrome on the phone with WiFi on I followed your link to the Play Store. I picked an app & tried to install, but it required that I first log in. (There was no option re how to install.) I logged in, & saw the normal Web view of the Play Store. I listed apps from the store & saw the normal list. I then tapped on an app & saw it's page, I then tapped Install, and it said it will install on my device soon. I then saw an alert saying that installation failed because the app could not be downloaded. When I ran Play Store it behaved just as before.

I went to Setting -> Accounts & selected my Google account (there's just one). When I viewed it (I was connected to WiFi), it was marked as "Sync error". I tried Sync now (from the menu) & the sync failed. I disconnected from WiFi, tried Cancel sync (Sync now wasn't listed), then tried Sync now, and it worked. When I clicked on the account I saw a list of apps & last sync times, with most last sync times today. I then added my existing Google account as a new account (even though it already was listed), and that completed without error. When I viewed existing accounts I saw a single Google account listed, just as before. When I tried to sync it, it worked just as before (i.e. successful only with WiFi off). When I tried Play Store (with WiFi off) it started normally (not like before), but when I tried to show Installed apps it just showed two buttons: one to browse apps & one to browse games. When I connected WiFi it behaved the same. When I tired Evernote sync it worked just as before: syncing worked only with WiFi off.

Saif Uv,

Thanks, but I don't use any of them. I almost always use Play store.

Anyway, I think something more than Play Store is messed up, since a number of apps that should sync via either WiFi & phone will sync only when WiFi is off.

Shahbaz200,

This morning I turned on my phone & I had a message that there were app updates ready to install. This was the first time in maybe 3 weeks. I entered Play Store & updated maybe 10, & then the problem came back. I tried Play Store from Chrome, & it didn't work, but when I tried the Play Store app it worked again so I updated everything. While doing that I found that it worked with WiFi off but not when it was on, just like Evernote.

So it looks like some of the stuff you suggested yesterday fixed the problem in Play Store, but not the problem that happens in Play store & other apps that breaks things when WiFi is on. For now I can make Play Store work (that's progress), but I have problems with it & Evernote (& probably others) when WiFi is on.

All,

I just tried disconnecting & reconnecting (not just turning WiFi off, but deleting the connection & then adding it again) to the WiFi AP I use. After I did that the problem went away.

shabaz200,

For a day now, ever since I reconnected to WiFi, everything that had a problem works fine. That's Evernote, Play Store, Flight Track, & TripIt Pro.

Thanks for your help.

If anyone has this problem in the future there are a number of good ideas that were suggested by shahbaz200:
1) Go to settings - > Applications - > All. Clear data of Google play store, Download Manager, Services framework.
2) Clear the cache via Settings -> Storage -> Cached data.
3) Make sure the Time and Date settings are correct.
4) Turn Airplane mode on and off.
5) Go to https://play.google.com/store?hl=en from your device. Try to download/update any app. It will ask you to complete action using either Play Store, internet, or any other browser. Choose internet and it will redirect you to put in you email and password for your Google play account. Put these in and see if the play store works.
6) Disconnect & reconnect WiFi (not just turning WiFi off, but delete the connection & then add it again). This is what finally fixed the problem I had.

I did all of the above but still have the problem. #5 resulted in "This browser is no longer supported...try Play Store" before even displaying the site. I tried Web and Dolphin browsers. Presumably, Google is insisting the Play Store always be used.

I also tried the following to no avail...

    ■ Removed /etc/hosts.
    ■ Cleared Dalvik cache.
    ■ Uninstalled updates to Play Store. This one caused larger problems solved by re-installing the latest version.

Any other thoughts out there?

After doing nothing about this problem for a day or so, it has disappeared!? Pretty sure I never even rebooted the phone. Turned it on this morning and some apps had updated. I wouldn't conclude that nothing I did had an impact; however, maybe something between Play Store and the phone gets out of whack requiring time for resync.
