I was looking into building a server and was wondering about the best OS to get.

I work with video so I want to be able to edit projects from the server, is that possible? For example when I save the project, I want it to save into the server and update that file. Is that possible?

My question is: What is the best OS server for this kind of work?

I guess nothing more than a shared storage. If I could update projects without having to upload the file every time it's updated that would be awesome. Is it possible to do that with FreeNAS? Btw, what else could you do with a server? Host games? I might be thinking about doing that, but what would be the difference between hosting servers on the server vs my pc?

With a NAS (FreeNAS, or commercial) you would create a shared folder on the server. Put you files in the shared folder(s) and you could then mount them on your computer as a new drive letter. You would then access them just as normal.

Hosting games might require a different solution. I don't know if you can host games on FreeNAS. It is a Linux OS.

Okay, that's exacty what I want. But would I be able to partition let's say a 3tb drive, 1tb for the shared folder and 2tb just for storage? And how would I access the 2tb if it's not "shared"?

How do you want to access it? Do you want it to be available via HTTP? Or do you want it mounted to a specific computer? You could FTP? Even with a "shared" folder, you can set permissions so that it is "private" to an specific users you desire.... I need a little more help on what you WANT to do with the space.

I want to access it through the list of hard drives on multiple computers and access it via http so I can retrieve my projects from various computers from different locations.

Plus if I'm editing off the server, would it be using the server's cpu/gpu or my pc's cpu/gpu?
