Greetings,

I'm currently in the process of building a home server which will be running Ubuntu 14.04 Server, GitLab, Jenkins, Samba and maybe a Plex Server. I'm using a Corsair Carbide 240 which can hold 3 3.5 and 2 2.5 HDD's. I currently have 3 500Gb Western Digital WD5003ABYX which are labeled as enterprise storage black. I was planning on using one for the OS and the other 2 in a RAID 1 configuration.

Now my question is since I can't add another 3.5 HDD to this case and I have 2 2.5 slots free, would it be safe to use a 2.5 hard drive (non-enterprise & not used w/RAID) for a home server running the apps/software noted above? Also, does it matter whether the drive is labeled as Red or Black, this is in reference to Western Digitals marketing of their HDD's.

I don't plan on having the server running 24/7, simply M-F 7-10 and an occasional weekend here and there.

Thanks in advanced for your knowledge and help.

Usually those 2.5" slots are for the addition of SSD's. Personally I'd add a pair of SSD's in either a RAID 0 or 1 config for the OS and programs. Then load up the other drives with all the files and media. That will give you great performance and you can upgrade/maximize the storage of the 3.5" bays later without having to reinstall anything.
