Is it the Core 2 Quad Q9550 or the Radeon 6770 that's bottlenecking me?

Hello!

Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this!

I built my computer back in December 2009, since then, I've added components to it. The current specs are as follows:

CPU: C2Q Q9550
RAM: 8GB (4x2GB) Corsair XMS2 PC2-6400 800 MHz
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3L (PCIE 2.0 x16, not 2.1, Sata II 3Gbps)
GPU: Diamond Radeon 6770 1GB GDDR5 (PCIE 2.1 x16)

I recently got into SCII and am playing through the campaign of HotS on Ultra settings. It seems that my computer lags when I mass many Zerg. I didn't notice a problem in WoL, though.

Anyway, I pulled up the Windows Task Manager and split the view so I can see all 4 cores and noticed that none of the 4 cores really jumped past 80% (eyeball estimate). I did notice, however, that the 4th core was utilized more than the rest.

I then downloaded MSI Afterburner and saw that my GPU was operating above 70% almost the entire time I'm playing and lived close to 95%+ when I hovered over Zerg Creep (probably because of the high graphics quality of the dynamic nature of Creep).

Anyway, I am super confused because anytime I have 200+ units onscreen, it lags. But when it lags, the GPU usage is not necessarily above 90%. It looks to me like I can use my CPU/RAM/Mobo combo for maybe another year, but the GPU is what is bottlenecking my old system and needs to be replaced.

I'm not sure whether I should replace that GPU or suck it up for another year or so and then buy a new system. Or maybe there is a flaw within my reasoning? Perhaps I don't understand something?

Thanks again for your help!

It is the CPU. GPU usage should always be over 90%, really almost 100% unless you have a frame limit set. the only reason it would not be is if the CPU was bottlenecking it. Starcraft is hard on a CPU not graphics which is the only reason your old 6770 is keeping up.

I've scanned the forums previously and have the following regarding my computer to add:

Overclocking: No overclocking - everything is stock.
PSU: It's a 550W CM PSU that has a 6pin which connects to my GPU.
Cooling: The CPU and GPU both have stock fans and heatsinks. I think the ventilation design may be pretty poor ... I'm contemplating also buying a new case and rethinking the cooling. I just threw it all together without considering improving the fans in my case. I'm not sure if that has an effect on my GPU and CPU performance.
