Hey all,

Need some help from an expert with upgrading a previously home-built system (back from late 2010). Here are the specs I have:

CPU: i5-760 at 2.8GHz (no OC)
Mobo: ASUS P7P55D-E Pro
GPU: GeForce GTX 460 1Gig x1
Memory: G.Skill 4Gig DDR3 SDRAM
PSU: XFX XXX Edition 650W

I was wondering what would get me the most increase in speed for the money -- both for games and multi-tasking with many applications open at one time.

I feel like my 4gigs of RAM is holding me back sometimes when things slow down and I open task manager to find something like 80-85% of physical memory being used. Does this make any sense?

If so ... upgrade/add to RAM? Or upgrade CPU/Mobo/GPU would be better? Appreciate any thoughts! Thank you!

No reason to upgrade the cpu until you're ready to do a complete overhaul. Your i5 is stronger per core than the FX chips that everybody still constantly recommends on here. You're still running at stock speeds? May as well overclock the crap out of it haha.

You could easily get a GTX770 + RAM + ssd for under $500

That would be like getting a whole new system.

Upgrading to 8GB of RAM would be good as long as you don't have the 32-bit version of windows. Getting a ssd would be the best quick upgrade you could do. What is your budget? Obviously a new video card would help if you can afford it.

I am running 64-bit operating system. I was already set to buy an ssd as well and will grab one on Friday.

As for the budget, up to $400-500 would probably be reasonable. Would you sooner upgrade the cpu or gpu?

Haven't kept up with GPUs in a while but I'm guessing the 770 is pretty strong? Would I be able to run it in SLI with my 460 or they both have to be the same card?

Thanks !

You have to have two of the same card to run SLI. I'm not a fan of SLI. I think you would be held back by vram if you SLI'ed two 460s. I would rather have one really strong card like a 770. The R9 280x and R9 290 are also really good for the price. The GTX770 sits in between them both in price and performance.
