dropped passport hard drive

Hi. When I plug the Mac passport in to my Samsung google chrome notebook it no longer reads it. It does acknowledge USB drive and that it can not read and needs to be formatted. I have video footage and audio from 3 months of shooting a webseries that has not been edited yet. What would have if I allowed the google chrome book to reformat the passport? It's the holidays do I go ahead or wait 2 days to take it in to a place like geek squad. I'm novice when it comes to these things.

Do not format it - that will make it significantly harder to recover the data.

Did it previously work on the Chromebook?

Have you tried another computer?

Thanks for telling me to not format it. Yes I would see the name of the hard drive and the files. I was not always able to see all the files because chrome does not have quicktime installed I could only hear the audio. I have not backed it up yet and scared shitless everyone's hard work will be lost. I had it so I could view on a Mac computer later but in the meantime had to get a file off it to upload on to a website which worked. Now after the drop it just spins. I tried 4 times. Should I stop trying. I will not be able to try another commuter for 48 hours.
