Hey guys i have a fxf 290 and when playing higherend games like The Evil Within or Arma 3 i find that my card temp goes up to about 90C and to counter this i have brought the GPU fan speed from %20 to %40 which keeps me just below 70C. Is this bad for my fan or is it okay? I have looked up the card and apparently the cards made to run this hot but I cant help but feel a little uncomfortable with 90C. there is a super fan mode on the video card that you turn on via a switch on the card as well. Just dont want to bust my GPU fan

Solution
the r9 290x run hot..

70c is an average temp and a safe zone...

AMD officialy stated that their cards can tolerate upto 90c... but i say keep the fan high.. 70c is much safer

i have 3 exaust fans on the back, 1 on intake on the front and one intake on the side as well as one more on the bottom back of the case. I would keep the fan at this speed only during gaming so at most about 1-2 hours at a time. well thanks for you input and ill double check case cooling.

Do you live in a hot / humid climate?

Only three scenarios I can imagine here

1 - you live in a hot / humid climte
2 - poor case cooling (you have very good cooling so this shouldn't be the issue)
3 - the gpu's heatsink wasn't properly installed in the factory.

20% @ 90C sounds quite low though for the fan though, GPU fan would typically spin up a lot earlier than that...

On a side note, 40% fan load is still quite low, I'd reckon you'll enlongate the life of your card's chip than you will shorten your fan's life

I live in Vancouver and its pretty cold at this time of year so I'm sure the climate is fine and i have only two heat vents in my room and i have shut the one near to my PC. Thanks everyone for your help, and i appreciate your input. I think ill keep the fan speed up to %40 while gaming as replacing the video card would most likely be a lot more expensive then replacing the fan.
