Happy Holidays All,

Im at that time when I can no longer stand the windows index rating and Im reaching out to the collective for advice and opinions before I hit the "add to cart button". First here are my current system's specs:

CPU: i5-3570k oc@ 4.5Ghz (3.5 stock)
MB: Asus P8Z77-V LK
RAM: 16GB
GPU: MSI Radeon HD 6950 2 GB GDDR5
PSU: Corsair Enthusiast Series 750-Watt 80 Plus
HD1: Kingston 120GB SSD (for OS and select programs)
HD2: WD 320GB 7500 HDD (for some games)
HD3: WD 1TB 5200 HDD (for more games and personal files
Cooling: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
Case: Thermaltake Chaser MK-1 Full Tower
Misc: 2x 200mm fans, 1x 140mm fan, 3x 120mm fans
Monitor: Samsung un60es7100

So currently I'm using my PC primarily for gaming on a 1080p monitor. Next year I will have access to some CAD software that I plan to learn to use as a hobby (at least for now). I will still be gaming on the system and I will probably spring for a 4k monitor next holiday season but Ill be using just the 1080p for the next year.

I'm torn between the AMD's dual R9 295x2 dual GPU or a single GTX 980X with the option to add another and SLI at a later date.

A newb question here:

Does a dual GPU (like the 295x2) only fully function on games that support crossfire?

A couple of things here:

*I will most likely never use multiple monitors as I prefer a single larger screen to multiple smaller ones, despite the limited total resolution of a single monitor vs multiple. Currently 1080p but will eventually be upgraded to 4k.

*I often game in 3d (right now using 3rd party software from TriDef unless in-game support is present)

A Budget question here:

Can i make the 295x2 work with the 750 watt PSU i have, its a quality unit but it is only 750.... does using the card below its full potential reduce the energy demands? I dont mind pulling a HDD out if it saves needed juice....

price is the reason this is even getting considered. The 980 is fairly new and in demand. It hasnt seena price drop yet its actually going for a little over the original MSRP (550 i think) currently around 570 on amazon. The 295x2 is going for 729 on amazon right now, a difference of 160 for a more future proof card? or am i looking at something I dont need with the AMD? If the 295x2 only fully functions with crossfire supported games than I will probably just go with the 980 and add another later....

Thanks for the suggestion(s) I am considering the 970, I'm hoping to be able to run most games for the next 2 years or so at max setting w/45+fps or (close as can be) on 2160p. I didnt say so but I never have a clean build, these components filter down to my second class setup that I use at an actual desk, I'm planning this upgrade to last for a while so I'm not concerned about the GPU setup being disproportionately stronger than the rest of the current components. I would like to SLI the GTX's either way eventually if I go that route I was just wondering if a dual GPU is more efficeint than a SLI setup, or are they potentially the exact same thing? I'm unsure about whether dual type cards require games to have SLI or Xfire support in order to be most effective. Can anyone fill me in on that?

Ok then its settled. Im going with a single gtx 970 and then ill either upgrade to sli when my monitor gets upgraded or buy a newer single gpu. Thanks a lot everyone for the input!
