I have a Samsung 840 Pro SSD 250GB - bought an additional SSD to run in RAID with this,- by accident the 840 EVO 256GB (wanted the 840 PRO).

- Can Samsung 840 Evo run in RAID with Samsung Pro 840 without any issues?

Hardware provider tech 1 told me: Yes, but it can be an issue,- i'd always recommend to run with identical

Hardware provider tech 2 told me: Yes, dont think about it, it should be alright.

Never setup RAID before, but always thought they needed to be identical. I'd really not want to return and have to wait again, but naturally don't want to anything with a good chance of failing either.

AHCi sometimes contraindicates iDE mode, but I reckon that You already is running in AHCi. Switching from iDE to AHCi and from AHCi to iDE crashes Windows 7/8 installation, but after repair it recovers easily.

You cannot revert RAiD array, only raid1 array into two normal drives, raid0 array cannot be reverted.

Besides that, it's just as You wrote :)
You can even run HDD with SSD in raid0, but You'll have to face the fact that slower drive will throttle whole raid0 array. There will be no problem running 840 Evo with 840 Pro, besides lower iOPs operations caused by Evo.

P.S.: Also for raid1 the drives don't have to be identical. They'll simply take the size of the smallest drive in the array.

Hi guys,

Thanks a lot for the response - I see you referring to RAID 0 and RAID1 - im a bit unsure what this relates to. Is it a matter of which SATA slots I run the RAID from or simply a term used when setting this up in the BIOS?

Think I read that RAID needs to run from certain SATA ports on the motherboard (MSI X99 gaming) - is that correct?

raid0 is for performance. Half of the data is on each drive, You have twice the space, though, You have 100% higher chance of system failure, due to fact that system and data are stored on two drives.

raid1 is for storage safety/backup, it's mirroring. Same data are on both drives, twice.

If You're not seriously working on Your computer, don't build raid0 array, or if You don't need 1 GB/s read/write values.

P.S.: You need to setup a raid array in raidmenu [ctrl + I or L, never remember this correctly] while Your computer boots up. While building raid1/0 array, You're going to wipe out both drives of all data.

I will only have windows + programs on this - critical files etc stored on external HDD

So I will have The adobe package + windows on the RAID and all graphical files on separate SSD, which will save and load to the external SSD. My main thought was that windows and programs would run faster.

Which way would you suggest to go with the above in mind?

Ok thanks for the suggestion!

So just to understand this entirely clear:

1. For my usage, I wont benefit "much" from setting my 840 Evo + 840 Pro as RAID 0 versus setting AHCi mode for SSD drives.
2. If going for the AHCi mode approach, then nothing will be in RAID, correct? I will simply plugin my 3 SSD (also have an 850 PRO) into a SATA port
- and next boot up in BIOS, find something called "onchip sata type" and change that to: AHCi mode ?

I should be able to change to AHCi mode without re-installing and wiping my SSD or?
