What will happen with an AMD 4100 with a GTX 970?
I currently have an AMD FX 4100 3.6ghz CPU and a low mid range AMD GPU. I'm looking to get a GTX 970 but i don't know what will happen as ive read it can bottleneck with too slow of a cpu. I dont really understand what it means, so if i put a GTX 970 in my machine (my PSU is big enough on an added note), what will happen?

I have checked everything else to ensure the card would work but somehow i completely forgot about my CPU. I'm pretty much over my budget anyway so if doing this will destroy my pc (As you can see, i know a lot about PC upgrading) then I'll just wait til i have more money to buy a new cpu too.

Thanks

It won't destroy your PC :D

What bottlenecking is , simply the CPU will hold the card back from achieving its full potential :)

If you haven't bought the card yet then I recommend that you spend towards upgrading your entire system rather than upgrading the GPU only , like for example if you have 350 bucks then you can buy a FX 8320 along with a R9 290 which will give you better performance than your FX 4100 and GTX 970.

Ah, thank you. I was looking around to try to understand what bottlenecking and although i understand the concept, i dont understand by how much performance is affected. Being a console gamer from a kid really doesn't help lol

In regard to your comment, i think i may have to just wait then, as i currently have to buy new speakers, a new monitor, GPU and PSU. If i wait couple of months i should be able to get a new CPU, cooler and upgrade ram from 2x4gb to 2x8gb.

Thanks again

You're welcome.

Hi There himynameiswill. I know this thread is 1 year old but I just wanted to add.

I recently purchased a GALAX EXOC GTX 970 4GB card and I run a AMD FX-4100 cpu

I am running Fallout 4 on 60fps with most settings on Ultra and High 1080p & Vsync on, only in city areas the frame rate drops to around 40-50
I also run The Witcher 3 with most settings on Ultra and High in the 50 - 60 FPS range 1080p resolution

My build
AMD FX-4100
Gigabyte AM3+ 990FXA D3
8Gb DDR3 RAM
Intel SSD for Windows 7 64bit (Games running on Seagate 7200rpm)
GTX 970 4gb (Galax EXOC)
Corsair GS600 watt PSU
