I'm looking to upgrade to an i5 4690k with an ASRock Z97 Extreme4 and would like to overclock the cpu to around 4.5 if possible I'd be running it with a Cooler Master Hyper 212, would this cpu be able to overclock well with this motherboard? Thank you.

I just bought these parts and an h55 cooling system. I have heard it is pointless to go through so much assembly burden for the same output as a hyper212 evo. I believe the h55 will hold the system back from max performance, but since I only have a radeon 7850OC, there's no need for the extreme overclock with more voltage and all.

Once I invest in the gtx 980, I will see the need for a better cooling system. At that point, I will take some measurements and see if a 240mm system would fit with the ram I have in a corsair carbide 200r system.

The 212 will do just fine except for higher voltage and overclocks over 4.6-7ish, depending on the chip

My 212 has no problem handling a 4790 @ 4.7 with 1.23vcore in hwinfo64. That's an i7 that will and does run hotter than an i5 without hyper threading.

If you're looking for near 5.0ghz or sub 70c temps under full load, then yes you'll have to to delid/buy a better cooler

My 2 cents

So the verdict is, if you want extreme overclocking, you need a good noctua air cooler, or 240mm liquid cooling system. Unless you are doing some extreme encoding, or need the performance for an MMO, or are just an over-enthusiast looking for unused speed, the 212 is an all-around performer. The H55 is pointless for the installation and cost. The 212 evo outperforms it, and mounts super easy.

I was turned onto air cooling when I looked at benchmarks with temps and noise level by each machines. a 140 and 120mm fan between two metal dissipators inside the case is more quiet sometimes than a 240mm radiator with two 120mm fans blowing air outside of the case.

However, depending on the RPMs it's definitely possible the air cooling fans are louder, but it is typically just the air moving quicker. A lot of fans come with resistors that slow the fans down 200 rpms or so.
