I am recently (within the last month) having this issue.

The cd/dvd drive is just GONE to windows. The BIOS seems to be able to access the drive but windows has not clue about it?

I am on an HP Pavilion dv9820us which I have used with little trouble for about 7 years with Vista 64 home Premium.

I have tried ALL the methods listed in HP Support Forum to no avail. I have followed ALL the steps they mention (as best I could since I cant update drivers, see below) also to no avail. I have even bought a new drive and inserted it and booted up and it functions with the same problem.

The problem seems to be (and please note ALL the details below)

1) There IS NO listing for a dvd/cd drive in My Computer.

2) There IS NO listing for my specific dvd/cd drive in device manager (wait for it)

3) There IS NO Category/Tab for DVD/CD-ROM DRIVES in my device manager ???

4) The drive lights up and spins (and the button to open the tray works) at the BIOS boot before windows loads.

5) The drive doesn't light up or spin, and the button will not release the tray AFTER Windows Boots up.

PLEASE help me to resolve this!!

Hi Paul, Thanks for your answer,

When I say above that I have tried all the usual methods, I mean;
1) I run MrFixIt several times and it cannot resolve the issue.
2) I have checked the registry for Upper or Lower limits and found none to delete.
3) I have ade sure my device manager view included hidden devices and that didn't help.
4) I uninstalled the IDE and ATAPI controllers from device manager and rebooted to get then to reset, but that didn't help.
5) I have tried to go back to the oldest restore point, but that didn't help.
6) I have removed the drive and re-seated it and rebooted and that didn't work.
7) I replaced the drive with a brand new drive of the same model and that didn't work.

I have tried oter things, but these are the popular ideas, so I am looking for something beyond these!

Just out of curiosity, are both your HDD and optical drives SATA? If so, what happens when you try to boot from your HDD using the SATA connector on the motherboard that the optical drive is using? Seems like you have certainly covered the basics at least. Another item, have you checked your BIOS to see if that particular IDE/SATA channel has been disabled? I have had that happen before after a BIOS update/reset.

Good luck!
