I have two plans but, I am a noob and its my 1st build. For BF4, Dark souls, Minecraft and I am starting to get into video editing.
I plan to overclock and one day when I have funds.. crossfire(with a bigger power supply),and add cooling probably water. I am picking up the parts starting today to get a deal on the cpu and maybe a power supply.
I was planning my i5 build all along but, the price difference is not much.
I moved to a different motherboard for the i7. Should I change it back? GPU bottleneck problems with i7???
Keep it around $1200. I plan to be able to expand without stating over. So I know I am wasting a little money..for now.
Votes?
Changes to either?
Any crap parts?
Thanks in advance.

Solution
1) Coolers:
The CM "EVO" can cool enough on the default 4.4GHz CPU setting (which I recommend) however the NOCTUA NH-U12S will be quieter under load and virtually SILENT in idle with your motherboard fan control software (download) setup properly.

Considering the TOTAL COST of your build I suggest the Noctua NH-U12S especially considering you can also get a GTX970 which runs silent at times.

*Don't overclock the CPU. The default profile is already 4.4GHz. If you try to overclock further you break the profile Intel made which can start to raise the temperature quite a bit. Not worth it IMO for virtually zero game improvement.

(Having said that, you might have a quick "overclock" option in the BIOS. Forget the name. It may get you to...
This is what I would do

Recommend a GTX970.

You're far better getting the i5-4690K instead so you can get the better video card.
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/GTX_970_STRIX_OC/25.html

I like the Asus Strix, or EVGA 970 ACX 2.0 (1.17GHz model). They both can turn off their fans in light usage as well. Also use about 100Watts less power than an R9-290X.

Other parts I'd change:
1) Noctua NH-U12S CPU cooler

2) Asus Z97-A motherboard (yes, it's more expensive but higher quality. Keep in mind a $30 difference is under 3% of your build cost)

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/pgDcmG

Use that as a guide at least.

Quick tips:
1) update BIOS
2) set "XMP" and save in BIOS
3) run MEMTEST (after first two steps)
4) install Windows (after first three steps only to ensure no corruption)

Other:
1) get Start8
2) Main Chipset drivers etc from motherboard site
3) setup fan control software (motherboard support site)

FYI, the Noctua NH-U12S is silent in idle and barely audible if you setup fan control correctly. I really don't recommend a liquid cooler since the pump will always be on and failure means a dead PC. I've never even heard of a failed Noctua fan and it can even run without one.

Your motherboard likely has a "quick" overclock method to raise the CPU Turbo slightly. That's what I'd use. Make sure your memory profile doesn't get changed; if so, click "XMP" again to set it back.

Thanks for the answer.
I picked up the Z-97-AR ATX 1150 for $80 at Micro center. Is it good enough less the extra outputs?(I can return it)
This is where I am.. I saved on the motherboard and i7 then upgraded the GPU and cooling. Keeping around my budget.

I picked up two items and changed the case, better cooling and faster RAM.
Is it still a good starting point for an OC i7 build?

Thanks I added the Ram and the Seagate memory. Later the solid state drive so I can get a bigger one.
Purchases today i7 4790K and Asus Z97-AR. Next up is my GPU and case. I think a GTX-970 is in reach.
I see the cooler you have is a good value. What about the Noctua NH-U12S? It gets great reviews.
I am only hoping for 4.5 GHz to start with. Changed my case too.

It may get you to say 4.5GHz and not change other settings that raise the temp. Make sure your DDR3 memory settings don't get messed up. If they do, click "XMP" again.)

2) Keep the Z97-AR motherboard

3) CASE:
I suggest one that has controllable fans or at least ones which are very quiet in LOW mode. It's hard to get that info sometimes. I think the NZXT 220 (budget case) has variable fans you can connect to the motherboard but I forget.

4) My recommendation on the EVGA GTX970 SC ACX 2.0 1.17GHz model stands.

*WARNING: some GTX970's are prone to "COIL WHINE"; I did some research and found that EVGA commented that this was an issue they addressed when coming out with the above card.

While I'd love a backplate as well, my biggest concern is avoiding coil whine and that's the only comment I've found that suggests a particular model may not tend to get it.
