Which eould give the better result: Two 970s in SLI or one 989?

Solution
970 SLI will have a better performance. Both 970/980 are future-proof, of course 980 will be better if you later on can have it in SLI, but especially the 980 I'd recommend waiting for the 8GB VRAM version (but it will be more expensive). Price/performance is 970, the 980 still too expensive.

I was in the same conundrum, but in the end the GTX 970 SLI won out.

Price point - 2 x GTX 970 cost about 15 to 20% more than 1 GTX 980
Performance - 2 x GTX 970s easily outperform 1 GTX 980
Future Scenarios
- "what if we get 2 GTX 980s" - you can get 3 GTX 970s for much cheaper and it should outperform 2 GTX 980s
- "what if we get 3 GTX 980s" - if you are not worried about the price - sure it will definitely beat the performance of the 3 GTX 970s by a tiny bit.
- "what if we get 4 GTX 980s" - If im not wrong we can get a max of 3 GTX 970s to work together - so in this case you can go for it - i guess this should be the best performance for people setting up 4k eyefinity.

P.S. Before buying any of the 9 series - I'd wait for Nvidia to first fix the display port issues.
