Hi all,

I recently decided to upgrade my game PC again (yay! :D)
I just want some feedback on wether i made the right choices on the components.

Mobo: MSI H97 GAMING 3, socket 1150
Why this one ? I think this is a solid motherboard for gaming. Since upgradeability is very important for me when buying a mobo, i chose this (rather new) socket 1150 to start with.

CPU: Intel® Core™ i5-4590, 3,3 GHz (3,7 GHz Turbo Boost), 1150 processor

GPU: ASUS GTX760-DC2OC-2GD5.
Ofcourse not the best card on the market, but since the budget is also not expendable, i decided to go with the GTX760 ;) the only thing i would maybe reconsider is the fact that it only runs on 256 Bit instead of others on 386 or 512 Bit. The pluspoint is that i can easily set up another one of these badboys and SLI them up on my motherboard.

RAM: Corsair 8GB DDR3-1600 kit
again, the budget thing. I can buy these for €90 instead of 16GB of DDR1333 for €150
But honestly, i dont know whats the difference between 8GB 1600 or 16GB of 1333.
Is this difference very noticable when gaming ?

I want to draw a line in my purchase, of a equally strong PC. It would be a shame to have an underproductive, expensive GPU because the motherboard doens't handle it well.

Could you guys give me some advice ?

Thanks alot !

Thomas

The motherboard can handle any of todays cards, the only thing you can gain by getting a more expensive mobo is SLI/crossfire and better overclocking potential.

Regarding the RAM, 8gb is plenty for gaming so go for that to save money.

When it comes to picking parts for upgradability, the motherboard isn't generally something you buy with the future in mind. The reason for this is that the future comes with new CPU sockets and possibly even new PCIe types which means you won't have a lot of choice if you're not prepared to to buy a new motherboard. Upgradability is more important with parts that are less likely to become obsolete in a few years such as the case, the power supply and the cooler.

Edit: Upon closer inspection I see that the mobo supports Crossfire but not SLI. This means that you need to get a GPU that is Crossfire compatible, the one you listed would be used in SLI so u can't have two of them on that board. Perhaps go for an AMD equivalent of that card, but do make sure that you have sufficient air flow in your case to deal with the heat this generates.

Thanks for the Reply 20salmon !

Good to know that 8GB of RAM is enough. A decent CPU cooler is also necessairy ? Or just 'good to have' ?
What about the CPU ?

Thomas

After market cooler is compulsory if you are overclocking, and handy if you care about noise. I was researching CPU's a few weeks ago and concluded that the i5-4690k is the best value for money at the moment, while the i5-4460 is also good choice if you're not going to overclock. The conclusion in the tests I read was that the more expensive ones aren't worth it in terms of value for money.

Yeah, i'm not going to overclock the CPU so i wont be needing the expensive one :) thanks !

What minimum of power does the PSU needs to provide ? Because i think my PSU provides enough power, but how do i know what power my components need ?

Great ! thanks man !

I calculated correct and i have enough power with my current PSU :)

regarding the motherboard, but i can use an SLI supported GFX card on a Crossfire supported motherboard right ?
The SLI or Crossfire support is only neccesairy when using 2 GFX cards, right ?

I'm not sure about this, I haven't tried it myself. Would definitely seek out more info on this before making purchase.
