PSU coil whine with new GPU?

Hey guys and galls,

I recently got a new Asus Strix GTX970 for my system. While trying it out, I noticed a very irritating coil whine coming from the computer. I checked with MSI Afterburner, and the noise gets the loudest when the GPU-load is above 50%. High framerates (like in game menus) also alleviate the problem. After reading some forums, I thought my 970 was the culprit. Was ready for an RMA.

But then I opened my case, and it seemed to come from the PSU. I double checked by removing it from the pc and putting my ear next to it, and yep, I'm 100% sure the PSU is causing it. The GPU is quiet.

TLDR:

- New GPU: GTX970
- High FPS: coil whine
- GPU load >50%: coil whine
- Noise coming from: PSU

After these observations, can I be sure the cause is a 'bad' PSU, and not a 'bad' GPU, knowing the noise is caused by the PSU? How come it only happens with this new card (higher power draw)?

I am also having this same exact problem, but with an asus strix 960. I was in the same boat as you was ready to drive back to microcenter and return it bc i thought it was causing the whine. But looking around some more i put my computer on its side and put my ear right next to the psu while gpu was under load and yes it was defiantly the psu. I have an older thermaltake tr-600 that i actually bought second hand for about 20$. I was hoping that a newer power supply more importantly a gold or platinum one will solve this problem. Was planning on picking one up this weekend and hopefully it will help.

I can confirm that it was indeed my old PSU, and a new one (Corsair hx750i) solved the problem!
