The Question: Can I use a dsl to ethernet converter to connect my modem-like thing to the router.

Ok, so I just got the Asus RT-AC68R dual band router which uses an ethernet cord to connect to the modem and I currently have a modem like thing that has a dsl connection. I say modem like because it isn't a modem, its something that is mounted onto the wall and leads outside.
We are with North State and are using their Fiber Optic internet.

Here is the converter I speak of:

I know nothing about networking system so please explain why or why not and what these different parts do if you can :).

I do not believe that the part in question will help.

I looked at the North State website, and they are sending internet to you over optical fiber. The box mounted on the wall you refer to is the optical network terminal. From the ONT, these should be a port to plug into to then connect the router. If this is not obvious, I would call North State and have them advise you what wire is required.
