Good day all,
Since a few weeks I've been desperately trying to fix this VERY annoying problem. I have been googling my issue forever and still have no idea what's causing this.
When restarting my PC and logging in, the Metro Start screen that comes up sometimes randomly freezes/locks up. I can still move my mouse but the tiles aren't clickable at all nor do the live tiles change. Any buttons on the Metro UI don't respond either and the charms bar doesn't show up. It is as if the screen is completely frozen except for my mouse. In some scenarios the tiles and buttons of the Metro Screen doesn't even come up after login and I'm left with a blank blue (which is my Metro theme color) screen and a cursor that I can move, yay...
During this freeze I only have 2 ways to get out of it:
1. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del and doing a restart. Choosing to log off instead and logging in again rarely fixes this problem.
2. Pressing the Windows key several times consecutively. When doing that, the screen blinks and the Metro Start responds again. An error also shows up in my events saying that Explorer.exe has crashed.
Things I have tried to fix this:
- A sfc /scannow doesn't show any corruption.
- Did a total Windows reformat and after a while the issue welcomed itself back again
- I don't use any third party anti-virus, only Windows Defender
- I have updated my nVidia drivers to 3 different WHQL versions but no avail.
Note that this issue is very random and mostly happens after a restart; out of the 20 times this issue occurred, it only happened once after a cold boot. Today has been the worst since this issue literally happened 10 times after 10 consecutive restarts.
I haven't made any changes prior to this issue except disabling the option for Windows to bring me to the Desktop immediately after a boot.
Specs
Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit with Media Center
i5-3570K (stock) CPU and a GTX 660Ti GPU with latest drivers (344.75 WHQL)
8 GB RAM and 1 TB HDD
I would be eternally grateful if anyone would take the effort to try and help me with this problem.
