I currently have a Radeon HD 6870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCIe 2.1 and I was wondering if I would be better off buying a new card to replace it or buy another card to crossfire with my HD 6870.

The card I am looking at replacing it with is the AMD Radeon HD 7970 3GB 384-Bit GDDR5 PCIe 3.0, $149 refurbished during Black Friday.

I am not sure what I would Crossfire it with... or even what would be an option to Crossfire it with.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Dhamon

PS- There are 2 cards I would consider replacing it with. They are:
- AMD Radeon HD 7970 3GB 384-Bit GDDR5 PCIe 3.0 ($150 refurbished)
- or -
- Radeon R9 270X 2GB 256-Bit GDDR5 PCIe 3.0 ($120)

IF replacing the card is better than crossfire, is the extra $30 for the first one worth the bump in performance?

Solution
The 270X is the equivalent, it actually technically is, a 7870 while the 7970 is the now re-branded 280X. The 7970 get significantly higher framerates and overall performs better. It's still rather relevant for being from 2011.
