A friend of mine asked me yesterday which reliable USB HDD I would recommend her and I basically said "None of the budget ones, just build one yourself".
I'm running an IT related business and get often USB HDDs with broken USB ports from customers or USB HDDs which died in less than 5k hours runtime because crappy HDDs are being used.
So I told her she should get for example the 2,5" version of the WD RED series and simply put it into an 2,5" USB 3.0 case. That way the HDD would be still usable even if the USB connector bites the dust and she would know at least that a semi-reliable HDD is installed.
I have no idea though where you could get such "Unusual HDDs" near Northampton or which online stores deliver cheap and fast. And the 2,5" USB 3.0 case needs to support HDDs with 9,5mm height.
